I have an early job 1 2008 f250 with 136k miles on it. Truck has minimaxx running 250 tune and 71/59 turbos. It makes a knocking noise most noticeable on startup after sitting a while like a couple days. It quiets down in less than a minute. Sometimes you hear it and sometimes you dont. I'm trying to decide to keep it or trade it. It's been a disaster that started 4 years ago with head gaskets then a year later cracked #8 and didn't know any better at the time so I just put a stock piston and rod in it (no damage to block) and a year after that I blew the turbos out of it. Anyway I took it to a local powerstroke specialist and they ran all the IDS tests on it and this was the results. He said relative compromise showed 0% on all cylinders and power balance with active fuel on showed dead even and with active fuel off fuel trim was + 6 on cylinder #7. Oil change before last I sent off for an oil analysis and it came back beautiful. I'm going to see if I can get a video of the noise

I would lean toward a BARELY worn lifter, or flat spot on the cam . something that doesn't play nice until there's some oil temp .

Thanks for the responses. It has 137k on it. The rockers have never been replaced nor have the lifters or anything but the turbos and #8 piston, rod, bearing, and injector.

oh and I normally use motorcraft 15w40 but this time tried the valvoline premium blue extreme synthetic 5w40 because I heard it's supposed to help quiet things up.

Everytime this thing has been apart I didn't know enough to do everything I should have done. Last time it was apart I should have done lifters pushrods valvesprings and rockers as well.

well its been 2 years since a head has been off and they only took the left side head off to fix the 8th piston. I guess it would have been at around 100k then.

Mine makes the same noise, when it's cold
Goes away 30 seconds. I have 10k on full rebuild - lifters , rockers, pushrods, heads ect.
Not getting worse so I just drive her
Maybe just a noise it makes....these 6.4's can make some strange ones!

You can hear something though right?

Sound through a video never does it justice but from what I could tell and comparing it to mine, yes I hear it. I think Jared, Mike, Stroke777, Groove, etc. could give you better advice than me since they have worked on them more than me but I would lean towards what has already been posted as to what is causing it. I do think it is encouraging that your oil analysis is good.

Yea I have been driving around all day looking at used 6.7's and have about decided to just put some tires on it and keep on trucking. One of two things is going to happen. It holds together until I decide to trade it or it grenades.

I would get a new shop if they did heads on the truck and didnt have them checked. Doesnt sound like a specialist shop. Especially not if they didnt spend the extra few hundred and do lifters in it.

Noise wise id agree w mike
