Oven Cleaner to remove chrome?

I know a few have used oven cleaner to remove the chrome on the headlight bezel. What is the quality of the finish once the chrome is removed? I am wanting to go with a black bezel but would rather not have to paint it.

I have done it a few times, usually keeps the black plastic just fine. Let it soak, and rub any remaining off with a microfiber cloth. Just in case the plastic gets soft. Don't use a scrubby pad or anything that can damage the plastic.
