My Should Not Have Bought This Project

I was initially interested in the forum for the Army name, since I am a soldier, and I have based nearly all purchases from guidance and vendors here. I figured I'd consolidate and give myself a place to beg for advice/help in one place.

I say I should not have bought it because I bought my 2008 F250 Lariat from an insurance auction online, via pictures. It claimed "Runs and Drives" so it couldn't be that bad right?! I was stationed in Germany and preparing to move to TN soon; I wanted it to be waiting for me. Sold.

The shipping driver called me with surprise that it was as nice as it was and drove it on his trailer. When he delivered it, my buddy said it ran ok and parked it.

When I got to TN and looked it over I added coolant to the empty degas bottle and went to get fuel. It overheated and was blowing white smoke. Should have known it was too good to be true.

I towed it to Swamps, and after waiting a few weeks they told me it needed a new engine, because coolant flowed straight through to the oil pan, without pressurizing it. I couldn't accept the $11k quote and decided to tear into myself.

We pulled the cab and a friends place and hauled the chassis to another friends shop for a slow dissecting.

After pulling the valve covers it was obvious the problem showing the bad symptoms was this popped freeze plug.

It's crazy that most shops around here will quote a complete engine or at minimum a head gasket job when they have not even checked for the simple things. I have fixed several leaking egr coolers lately that were diagnosed as blown head gaskets. Sometimes it pays to double check.

People say oil and water don't mix, but they sure do turn into a milky mess and it was in everything. I flushed and pressure-checked the radiator and intercooler multiple times till clean. Flushed the coolant passages and cleaned the block with a 3M Roloc Green bristle brush. Replaced the oil cooler and water pump with new and soaked and pressure washed the intake manifold.

Never heard of victor hg's. most run oem.

When I worked as a parts guy, we would get them in place of felpro when there was a shortage. I would put quality right around or slightly below felpro. Wouldn't worry about using a non essential gasket from them but might be iffy on head gaskets.

I bought a VGT batmowheel off the classifieds here and I'm glad I did, because when I took the turbo housing apart I found this

I got a set of vr head gaskets from Rudy's also, they said they are the same as oem. They told me that's who makes the oem gaskets for ford, idk. They look the same also, I didn't use them and bought ford ones.

The Flo Pro 5" exhaust clamps needed a bit of work prior to installation.

If there was coolant in the bottom end. You really should pull the pan, clean it out, and look at your bearings. Jmo

Anyone gonna ask why the frost plug popped outta the head?

Did you have the block pressure tested?

Nice to see you doing it yourself and saving some money. Gives you more money to build it more reliable for the same price some shops want for stock crap.

Good luck!:toast:

After I assemble the turbos tomorrow and install I should be able to set the cab this weekend.

What issues am I going to face on initial start up?
