Auction truck

Hi, I'm a new recruit to the army.
I just bought a 2010 Ford F250 at auction. It was supposed to be running and driving. Technically it did run but only on 7 cylinders and it did drive if you only wanted to go in a straight line cause the steering box input shaft was busted. Codes told me that the #8 cylinder had checked out. Oh ya, someone stole the DPF too.
I picked up another steering box and limped the truck down to the shop and I pulled the driver side valve cover the #8 exhaust rocker was off the fulcrum plate and the ball bearing was just laying there. The push rod looked ok. I pulled the rest of the rocker plate and found the intake push rod was bent. The piece of the head gasket that the push rod goes through was distorted on the intake side so I opened it up a little with another rod and now when I turn over the engine the push rod and lifter move smoothly. So I just ordered a new rocker assembly and a pair of push rods and bridges. If all goes well I'll be starting it up soon.
While I'm waiting for parts I'll be pulling the EGR valve and coolers and installing the DPF delete pipe.
I took some pics along the way and will post them if I can figure out how...

Here are some more pics from the #8 lifters through the endoscope. It shows the distorted head gasket guide hole before and after I created some space with a little thicker rod ie. 3/8" extension. Also pics of the lifters from the top. It all appears to be OK however this is the first 6.4l Powerstroke I've looked at through an endoscope so my opinion may be wishful thinking <grin>.

Start planning a engine build. I’m a 6.4 fan but you will end up needing to do everything right 1 complete time.

Good luck!

I received my new parts and have started putting the truck back together. Push rods and rockers appear to move smoothly when turning the truck over. Have a few more parts to remove then I'll finish putting it together.

So I have it running again. The pronounced miss is gone! I just ran it a short time as I still need to add coolant. Also turns out the SCT tuner I bought appears to be locked. It won't complete the installation and tries to send me to SCT. So I'll probably be looking for another tuner.

So cam and lifters and a cab off engine pull sounds like where I'm heading. How's the best way to verify lifters?
Check oil filter for metal. Can also pull the harmonic balancer and check the low pressure pump for stamps from needle bearings. They usually wipe the front cover and oil pump housing also.

Well, it's official. That engine is toast. I pulled the oil filter apart and found all sorts of shiney bits in there...

Sorry to hear/see that. Hopefully it's just the cam through to the rockers that need the work.

Do you know how many hours are on the engine?

Thanks Powerstroke Cowboy. I'm kinda bummed too. It ran better when I got #8 cylinder firing again but still didn't sound right.
I don't have engine hours however the speedo says 240k kilometers (150k miles) on the truck.
Now I need to rearrange my shop so I can use my lift to pull the cab and get down to the engine.

You should be able to find the hours through the dash display. If you pan through the display till you get to "system check" the push and hold the button till it starts cycling through the system. The first readout should be engine hours.

A hoist will really simplify the job. I would like to pick one up.

What kind of hoist do you have?

Thanks for the tip. Do you use the steering wheel controls to do the scrolling? If so I'll have trouble 'cause when the steering box broke the steering wheel was turned waaay too far.
I picked up a 10000# 2 post asymmetrical lift from a company that swapped out all of the lifts at a Dodge dealership down in Sacramento. It's an extra tall unit (about 2' taller than the standard). I've had it for 4 or 5 years now and love it. The hydraulic pump is getting really tired and I may have to get a replacement at some point but for my $1500 investment I'm pretty happy.
