Whats normal?

Well bought a 97 F350 XL with 250k on it for plowing/spare vehicle. Truck runs great, starts right up and theres no smoke. When taking off from a stop at full throttle the engine revs up really slow then once it hit second and third it pulls pretty hard. I don't feel any slipping just curious why first gear is acting this way. Is this normal? Would a chip help? would putting a chip in a motor with 250k just destroy it? the trans is a reman with about 50k on it. Thanks

either way a chip and an exhaust would help.. i would suggest ts performance or tony wildman... both make great power and are cheap.. my 97 had a hard time keeping traction from a stand still on 33's.. with a standard..

Which is what it could be, its hard to say without taking a very close look at it. Yeah a chip might help but me personally I would rather make sure fuel psi is good and so is hpo psi.

If it is absolute horrible off the line that make me think of broke sprag in the convertor.

A broken sprag makes the truck feel like the anchor is out off the line then run just fine with the converter locked. You lose the torque multiplication from the converter. It is not slipping.

makes sense, and unfortunately sounds like the problem. ordered a bts VB might go for a converter as well. what would be a good choice for something that will just be running a tune?

I suggest some quality diagnosis before you start pulling a trans.

Do you have a boost gauge?

How much boost are you pulling?


I would check your intake boots and also your exhaust manifolds

Im torn

Full force is highly recommended but ultimate has a great warrantee

Warranty is only good if they back it up (make sure to thoroughly read the fine print) and the company is still around if you need it, Cheers!

Good point.

A while back I bought a Hydra w/jelibuilt tunes (for stock injectors)

So I was looking at his website and it seems he carries both Brands...

Don't get me wrong I like the jelibuilt tunes it was a big improvement in power even with stock injectors

But, it was very touchy when you are first taking off
You almost have to put your foot on the throttle like it's an eggshell

It made it almost difficult to drive with a manual five speed/off the line

I went to the Hydra site and downloaded a couple of their canned tunes, and it was much better off the line and same overall power it seemed like.

I am going with 160/stock, nozzle injectors
Because I don't want a lot of smoke, and I dont have an intercooler.

Not sure what I should do about programming for the Hydra
Jelibuilt seemed pretty aggressive
Maybe I'll have to call them see if they can fine-tune a tune
