Smells not exactly my strongest sense lol. maybe it is fuel. Maybe bad fuel, I just had to drain the water today (just before I cracked my filter cap) and the fuel came out like a milky green/brown. I swear that water in fuel light has come on like 5 times in the past month

Or it could be that it's lost compression. I mean air box shattered, rip in intake, and map line unplugged for who knows how long, with a compressor that definitely has wear it's possible

Definitely seems like a tired/neglected old girl. Might want to start looking for a sound lowerish mileage motor to swap in.

Dude, that compressor wheel is looking pretty rough. I'm sure the motor has been dusted pretty bad. What is the oil consumption like?

The good thing is that you are under the hood and familiarizing yourself with everything. Like Ty said, we have all been there and had to start somewhere. Sites like this one have made knowledge/experience much more accessible.

I agree that map unhooked/broken shouldn't effect idle smoke output. What color is the smoke. Does it smell like unburnt fuel?
many many times been there

Hard to tell, between the oil spots on the ground and the blue smoke.. I'd say I'm probably down a qt total. I've just been telling myself that dusting would probably cause way harder starting then mine, and the blowby would have pressure. Maybe I'm just lying to myself tho lol

Just a bit above the botom of the "2qt down mark" but It was never much more than that hot. Let me clarify I knew the oil level I just wasn't sure how much was actually being 'consumed' lol

How does it start cold? try starting it tomorrow without waiting for glowplugs, if it starts fairly well the motor might still have compression, if it doesn't want to start at these temps, you probably have low compression. I am working in rosemount right now, If your interested I could stop by and take a peek- Not that I know a lot but a second set of eyes might help. Also I have the harbor freight compression tester, I think you still need an adaptor for the 7.3 but you can use it if you like, I never found the time to check my motor- pretty sure it's also low on compression.

I'll be working in rosemount tomorrow too, near u-pull.. That compression tester would really be awesome. I punched a hole in the fuel filter, and I don't want a fuel shower so that cold start will have to wait. https://vimeo.com/127222607 here's a cold start from a little bit ago iirc it was like 36-40 @ like 6am that was with the gpr completely disconnected

that starter sounds great-- for no GP warm up, its not bad. hell, mines crankier than that.

Agreed, this truck has missed lots of maintenance and Id keep working on the basics. With the crud in the fuel bowl, who knows whats in the tank. If this thing is worth the time, Id do the compression test, change the GPs and start with the basic maintenance.

Thanks guys for all the help, but the truck is gone .. Sold it to camel towing to be turned into a wrecker body. I just don't have the money to spend on it. It'll be better in their hands Thanks for all of your time

I started it today and it was smoking more than it ever has, and it never cleared up. Driving down the road there was a plume of blue smoke behind me. Needless to say once I got back I made a quick phone call and now it's gone

I just took the loss for the 7.3.. It wasn't worth my time/money imho. I got a 6.4 today though cob with 300k even on it. For $6k the dpf and cat were stolen off of it alone with another truck and trailer. So I just had them buy a straight pipe and a tuner to disable regen. They also stole the egt sensors too so I have to order those and have them weld bungs in the straight pipe.

Not a fan of the 6.4? I think it'll be good to me. I just went in got back from an oil change and had an oasis report done
