Powdered Metal Rod.....they are not nearly as strong as the older Forged Rods.

PMRs started making their way into trucks/engines in late 2000, so 2001-on you need to check. 02-03 is pretty much guaranteed to be PMR, but there have been a few exceptions.

Yep. Pulling the plug and shining a flashlight in the hole is much easier.

Sent from my truck while eating, adjusting the radio and passing a Mustang sideways.

You are relying a lot on the serial number. It says on the valve cover what the build date is. Honestly if it is a 2000 or later just check in the inspection hole. I am firmly against the serial # after finding pmr in a block that is in the middle of the serial #s of the 2nd run of forged rods.

the truck that i just bought has a junk yard motor in it. i want to know what i have. not just what rods are in them.
what i was hopping to find out what year the engine is

the # is
7.4J U2U 161283
that is the # stamped into the block at the oil cooler

Fml figure ford has to screw me... Valve cover says forged, took a peek in the inspection hole and looks to me as pmr's.... that sets me back..

Did you ever find out a way to identify the build date off the serial number?
