I thought it would be cool for people to post their power combos that are running 38r turbos. Just looking for people with or have used this turbo. Answer these questions when replying....

Mods done to truck (other than intake, exhaust, chip)
Do state who's tuning!

Horsepower/track time if possible.

Driveability (smokey, laggy, haze at wot)

And if you have used a different turbo before, what you liked/ didn't like.

If someone else thinks of something to add just post up. Thanks.

Currently....

The usual mods of AIS Intake, stock exhaust minus the muffler, GT-38R turbo w/1.15 turbine housing, RR Fuel system w/fuel bowl delete and pre/post pump filtration, Suncoast trans. Lifted with 37" tires and stock gearing. I am still running my DP Tuner F5 chip that I got over 130,000 miles ago (I'm at 265,000+ currently). I only use stock, "40hp tow" and "120hp race" and those tunes are from 2007 iirc. Nothing else I can think of that would effect power.

It has run a 10.4 in the 1/8 mile at 8200lbs. I don't remember the mph. It was on a dyno once and it wasn't a load dyno...in fact I don't even know the brand/model. It was pathetic and the guy running it had no clue how to dyno a truck/diesel. It said 265hp to the wheels and barely made 17psi. I have no idea if that is even close to right...nor do I care.

The driveability is great in the 120 tune although I've been driving it for so long I am used to it. I wish it wasn't so aggressive on cruise control, but...eh, I'm used to it by now. It will smoke like a pig if I stab it to the floor from a stop, but it quickly spools the turbo and cleans up to a light haze. Runs about 28psi boost. (Down about 3-ish psi from the stock turbo) If I drive it like an adult I can still accellerate faster than traffic and it will be a light haze. It seems to be getting slightly worse over time and I attribute this to worn injectors. (Still on the originals).

I have big plans this summer and already have the ARP head studs, Comp Cams valve springs, Smith Bros Pushrods, Motocraft glowplugs, sitting at the house ready to go in and will be ordering some injectors and tunes from Gearhead's to go with them. Planning on the 238/80's. HOPING to have a reliable 450hp daily driver that has a little left in it and still be able to tow 15k or more if I need it to.

Ran the 38R with a .84 exhaust housing, 1.00 housing and 1.15 housing.

Ran the 38R with stock injectors, AC's, 175/173's and 238/80 hybrids...

Best combo I have had was 38R with AC's and a 1.15 housing.

I ran the 38R for about 2 years with CAI, exhaust and stock sticks for about 1 1/2 years. It ran OK.

See sig for the rest.

After running the 38R for almost 4 years, I hate the damned thing because it's so loud.

On DI's tunes, it smoked like crazy. On Gearhead tunes, they clear up the smoke very well.

been running stock 38R with 250/80's on gearhead tunes for bout 3 years now... beat on the truck everyday, charger has been holding on strong. With Matts tunes Im almost smoke free except for in the Hott Tune of course. Gonna Keep Stock housing on and order the new Wicked Wheel for it. Swap her out when I get back stateside see how she does... As DocBar stated, its one loud A$$ turbo.. I LOVED it at first, and 3 years later, I've invested in an excellent stereo system to drown out the noise.

I am just finishing up adding a 38R to my truck with a couple complimenting components:

WW
Adrenaline HPOP
Strictly Diesel RR (pre/post pump kits)
AFE Stage2
4" Magnaflow TB

I'll let you know what the "seat of the pants" feel is once I am finished.

What kind of torque #'s were you getting with these?

That block lasted 5 more months, total of 33,000 miles on it...:cursing:

Haha, yeah I know the feeling. I ran 300-100's on the 38r with srp1.1, RR fuel, and everything possible to put on and around it performance wise. Lol the only thing stock was the bottom end. Lasted 5k miles. Then the rods chopped the block in half. And yes they were forged. Truck made 450 something and around 1300 tq. Their numbers were off because they kept loading it weird. They kept pulling the Hp reading way too high in the rpm range. Either way it pulled good. Made a lot of commonrail owners very unhappy.

Wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver. Way too big of injectors for that turbo. But it was built for specific class sled pulling. Did some sweet 4k rpm burnouts though, lol. And even though it was a 6sp cc dually I mustered a 9.1 in the eighth with a 2 second 60 ft.

Awesome! This is exactly what I want to do with mine. Gonna have to wait for my injectors, studs, rods, & springs for a bit but I will eventually get there.
