Looses everything

A buddy's truck will randomly die and loose power to the insterment cluster. Told him to clean the 3 connections on the drivers side and try again and it fixed that issue but now the fuel gauges reads empty. I'm not around the truck to check the wiring for him. Anybody had this happen??

I had this happen on my 08 turned out that one of the wires on my alternator was rubbed in two and barely making connection. Pulled the inner fender on the passenger side and was able to see the wire was rubbing right where the looming stops and the connector starts.
