What happened when your transmission failed?

I call bullchit on that^^ I keep my trucks for a minimum of 10 years- do my break is this way all the time and had zeros issues and that includes the 6 blow motor.
Tech says it's a normal noise- I drove it yesterday and the noise just part of the engine/trans noise. Like I said I think it's just broken in now. I dunno tough to describe with words on how it sounds(or sounded)
I understand and know a hand full of people that drive the pee pee out of their new trucks to break it in- I do things differently- majority of truck owners on here do not keep trucks all long as I do either so they wouldn't know how long the vehicle they broke in lasts for. Just a guess not a fact

On a great note I got my tuning straight now! Thanks to Mike, the noise probably I was thinking was from the different revised tunes I was trying out as well to work out the lag issue i had. All is good now with that.

I should've added an LOL At the end. I was just pulling your leg.

No way to take a video of the sound?

You know.... there is a reason I have my seat up and the pedals are adjusted all the way forward. I am 5" from being a technical midget lol lol I love the fully adjustable seating btw, I get to feel tall while driving

So back to the program :ford:
I assume mine is exhibiting the signs of failing but should I be concerned with the upcoming towing season (summer) or will something less than catastrophic likely happen as it really starts to go?

I have over 200K on my transmission now and it is starting to get real funky. TC lock is really weird in 4th, 3-2 downshift is real harsh, flare from 3-4, and now 5-6 is not really a flare but more like a lunge into gear. When in gear it is strong but I can notice little less power because of slip (maybe?) in the bands or weakness in the pump maybe. Question is what happens when they fail? My E4OD started flashing the O/D light and wouldn't go above 3rd gear, my TH350 would flat out blow up and fail on the spot or slip so bad you couldn't move. My transmission rarely gets over 190 degrees even in the 100 degree heat pulling 15k pounds and no burnt fluid. Other than the shifting between gears it is very drivable so hard for me to pull the trigger for a new one over what could be considered nuisances. Just wondering what the line to be crossed has been for those that have replaced the transmission.

Sounds like you need lower offgoing and oncoming pressures for the harsh 3-2 shift and more pressure for the 3-4 shift flare. I ended up purchasing a new transmission. My trans temps see 200, sometimes 205 even with the new one. I hope that's normal... As your are aware it's a very expensive fix. I had very similar problems and I sort of wish I had rode it out with the increased pressures to see how long it would go. In addition, my torque converter would come unlocked on the highway I had to increase TCC capacity. What sold me on purchasing a new transmission was a fear of the unknown. Not knowing when it would finally decide to give up on me and being able to replace the transmission on my terms rather than when it decided to finally give up. In hindsight, there's always trucks that can be rented when/if the SHTF. The new transmission is very nice, nice smooth/firm shifts but a very expensive repair. It's not as much fun buying transmissions as it is to buy things that add power, improve appearance or smooth out that 1ton bucking bronco.

I have the $ to replace now however I hate spending it if the transmission is still working for the most part. My concern, like yours, is I'll be in the middle of a trip with my fiver in tow when it gives up. Or the market tanks and I don't have the $ easily available when it goes out. So far I've approached it as a tuning issue but after having different tunes with different tuners it seem to be the transmission. Can I have a tuner write a file that will help the issues? Currently I'm running TyRaNt.

I don't have a minimaxx I've seen something called MCC tuning software for H&S does this allow you to change the transmission tables with your minimax?

Sure... if you're into building tunes from scratch.

dude, if you have the cash, then there is no way I would hesitate one second with a phone call to midwest diesel and auto to get a replacement on its way.. that is just craziness knowing that it could possibly chit the bed at any time. why not have the reassurance of having a trans that will hold a lot better then what you have now?

Wouldn't it be great if people would offer real world experiences about what actually happened to them with their 6r140 before it finally gave up.

I wish I had kept mine so I could let you know. The most I can tell you is that a combination of the transmission and tuning made it appear as though my transmission would lose 6th gear. If I pulled over and shut the truck off it would get 6th back. I was able to "fix" it by changing transmission parameters. Then the worrier in me decided to get a transmission that was built to handle more than the power I was giving it. I started noticing whirring noises from what I assume to be the pump thinking my programming fix was causing more harm than good. Turned out the new trans makes the same whirring noise. I was just being hyper-aware of a noise that was probably there all along.

I can tell you this, I most likely won't ever be running the same single turbo tuning from any of my previous sources due to the transmission problems I experienced.

the transmission fluid has a thermostat , it's meant to be at 200-205 at all times.

A lot of people worry about 200degree trans temp. My trucks trans temp is at 200-210 unloaded cruising. Hasn't skipped a beat with 102k miles.

I don't worry about temps unless I see 225+ for extended periods which is rare. I just meant that the temps in general are under 200 so heat hasn't been a contributor. As far as the $$$ I'm a financial advisor and hesitate to spend unless necessary but I get just replace and move on.

you dont have to worry about seals until 240* , so you're good .

Now that I think about it this shifting pattern has been going on for over a year now with no real change so I am not sure how close to failure I might actually be but I'm thinking it has life left. However I have been getting a lot of howl in the 3-4 shift recently if I am on the go pedal really hard. :priest:

What transmission did you change to from the stock 6R140?
