Well I'm looking to PTM my grill now and I've got a lead on a XL grill for a good price. Now my question is, would it be better to PTM the XL grill since its "textured" or PTM the chrome grill? I've heard mix things about this and I'm not to sure. Also I kinda need to the info on the quick cuz if I need to go with the XL grill, I'll have to stop on my drive home back to TX from this offshore hitch! Thanks in advance fellas!

I ordered a ptm (dark blue pear metallic) grille because the body shop said the xl wouldn't work as good. Because I was going to take off my grille off the f550 at work for free. But mine should be done some time next week. Along with the bumpers (stearling grey) and headlights (dark blue pear metallic). My rear bumper is at paint should be done this week stearling grey.

Just do the chrome. The grill is physically different too and imho doesn't look as good.

Chrome just requires a self etching primer and no smoothing, it's actually easier to paint chrome than rough plastic

Like I already said it's only one additional step sand with 180, self etching primer, epoxy primer is what I prefer next because it requires no sealer and it is strong. Then base coat then the clear

Th only thing you have to worry with painting the chrome is the chrome getting wrinkles in it within time. I have had that happen to several grilles before that's why I went with the ptm.

The 6.7 should be less susceptible to that because the grill no longer moves with the hood. And ford is usually pretty good about using good methods and chrome for the grills. That being said that is a honest risk you take.

Ford does offer a ptm shell if you would rather go that route, basically what's offered ford platinum and king ranch trucks

Yeah the body shop I talked to recommended me getting the ptm grille because he just told me from past experiences. But I got the grille from auto fair on here for 150 shipped to me.

I got the PTM mirror caps for my truck when I took the chrome ones off. They come pretty much a smooth gray primer base. I would Imagine the grill is the same way.

i think IF the chrome ever does wrinkle, ill just strip it and do it again. for $200 and a day it just isnt that big of a deal.

My gf has a 11 King Ranch dually that's tuxedo black with no flaking issues that's why I went the route I did. Because I don't own a paint booth and don't like paying for the job more then once. This is how my grille arrived. plus I only have 260 dollars tied up into everything.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372900095.289410.jpgi plan on doing some ptm too. I want to paint my mirrors just like this on my 6.0 and 6.7. But every body shop I've talked too said they don't want to touch it, and that I won't be happy with it.. I know there's a way to get it done, too many people have done it

There is an adhesion promoter that you first apply to plastic makin the area tacky enough for paint to adhere. If the ad prom isn't applied evenly and correctly then the paint job will not hold. This is usually the main reason most shops won't do the job.

All this chrome to PTM talk has got me itchin to do my grill. It'll be the first thing once the house sells (no free time). I'll make sure to do a detailed thread how-to for those weary of self etching.

What if you were to take the chrome mirror caps and PTM. That's actually what I plan on doing.

My problem is I haven't seen any other silver trucks with ptm'ed bumpers, grill surround and mirrors so I don't know if it will even look good.
