there is no 05-07 mid year change in the drag link or frame mount AFAIK
and the site I found list that unit for 05-07
this states 03 EX on the page bottoms

not sure on your year Ford went to a 4x4 module for the later years
does your PVH solenoid get the ground signal to one side when you select 4x4 ?
that could isolate this to the tcase side or module
power to the ESOF/ PVH solenoid is always present it is the ground that switches to activate the lock / unlock signal
if your 4x4 dash lights do not illuminate that's a starting point
you may have a cluster issue ?
your memory is backward ;-)
alternator feeds the pass battery then a jumper runs to the driver side
so like you mentioned it's good to run another cable from the Alt to the battery that does not have one ( the driver side )
you can try it but you will be second guessing yourself
especially if your adding power ( many of us who studded and did gaskets still pop them later)
and you won't have verified the heads are flat
