Since there are no dowels in the front cover I can see this happening. A always install, rotate and then tighten so that way it kind of finds it's center. Yeah, they say your supposed to freshen every season. But that's just them covering their a**. If the damper is truly bad it could ruin the pump. But the whole thing would vibrate and idle rough etc. it would be noticeable. Seems like it's just a freak thing that only happens once in a while. Seems that they are always after an engine has been put together too. I have not seen a factory installed one bust yet. But it's not a common enough problem for anyone to get too worked up about.
