6.4 auto to manual

Hey y’all! I have an ‘08 F-250.

I really don’t want an automatic transmission anymore in this truck. My other trucks are all manual. Is this a truck that is too much bullshit to convert to a manual. Would it be better to just find a manual chassis or another truck?

Pretty sure the rear cover is different, possibly the starter, think trans cooler lines and possibly the cooler are different, and you’ll need a tune to tell it it’s a manual. I think the tcase and driveshafts, and cross member are the same. Luckily these trucks did come as sticks, just fairly rare to see, so should be able to get all the parts to convert it.

I heard it is a lot of trouble on these 6.4’s. Most trucks, you can just dump the TCM and add clutch pedal and slave cylinder and pretty much done. Not these things I guess. I just did not know what all the changes needed.
I did not know the rear cover needed to be changed. Leave it to ford to need a different starter, lol.
Damn. I did find an 2010 F-450 in another state that has a bad engine that is a manual. It’s quite some distance to get it. Didn’t really want those high ass gears a big wheels.
The 6 speed trucks are hard to find.

My 08 is a six speed, but I ordered it that way. Can confirm the tune is different, Spartan had to hand jam me one as I was the first stick to be tuned and deleted.

Oddly last summer my trouble free 6.4’s first failure was sixth gear exploded on a mountain under too much boost with too big of a trailer. Made it 400 miles more in fifth but got stuck 1200 from home. Rented a ‘24 to get the rest of the way. Hated the DEF, so I’m never gonna get a new diesel for sure and fixed the 6.4.

I bought an eBay part out trans from a 6.0L truck. I was worried the cooler lines would be different, but everything matched up.



Otherwise, a 6.4 with the ZF is a riot and makes me smile all the time.

I have had great results with a Valair dual disk ceramic. Locks up like a bank vault no problems.
