Then use an emissions analyzer if your wanting to really nail it down. Looking in the rear view mirror for opacity check is not research. Sorry. Soot is not the problem per say. They are after carbon monoxide and NOx. The soot load is only a small portion of what they are after believe it or not. There is a reason they are alittle smokey with a dpfon. It's a NOX control. You make one burn nice and clean like you think and your going to be way out of compliance on NOX and CO regardless without an emissions analyzer. Caterpillars design flaw by design was to increase combustion temp WITH the dpf to cut nox. Trapping particulates happened to be the best way to do it to increase temp.(2 fold operation for the dpf) Then they added an exhaust injector as I'm sure you know. The game is nox control. So when there are some posts on "I'm trying to control nox and convert any amounts of CO to CO2 with a minimum of 93% reduction rate. Then I'll know your being serious about compliance with federal epa regulations that meet state and federal minimum new permits. I really wish you guys would use an emissions analyzer to do this new era of tuning. And I say that with all means of respect for what Yall are doing. It will put you guys WAY ahead of the curve instead of guessing what it is. And your "tuning" would meet federal regulations since that is the concern. Fwiw. When the engine is balanced with the proper NOX vs CO output you will find the AFR is spot on. Regardless if your at 600hp or 900 hp. Or 8500hp. $12k gets a nice analyzer with the proper sensors for diesel application.
