97 ford truck issues

Trying to help a friend diagnose his truck over 1200 miles away.

1997 ford 7.3

I had the Cam position sensor replaced and that fixed my issue with it jerking and dying. It smokes alot and also will put out a grayish white smoke intermittently. It has never been the same after I broke down the other year. They replaced the HPOP and the rings on the injectors. Since then it has smoked. It is really bad when I tow my trailer. The funny thing is that if I get it wound up around 3k rpm it stops smoking. It's bad between 2-2500 rpm when towing. I was told that the guys who did the orings probably didn't replace these cups that the injectors sit in and they should have.

Any ideas on the smoke issues? I know not much to go on, sorry, but I'll get more info.

Any good repair shops near San Jose California?

I would say to watch icp, just make sure its where it should be while he has the issue.

Also is he getting any fuel, coolant, oil mixing of any kind? That could be a big help.

He is looking for a shop to take it to really, I don't think he has the know how to trouble shoot.

He says he is not getting any mixing, but who really knows. I told him for the diagnostic fee a dealer would charge, he should just bite the bullet and get AE and start there.

Shoot, wish he was closer. Diagnostics can sometimes be the largest sum of a repair bill.

Hate to see him spend 200 to find a $30 fix. Have him contact me if he wants to try and troubleshoot over the phone
