Because of a truck fire, my KC TP38r was replaced with a KC S300 63/70/84. I contacted KC Turbo and discussed my situation. Upon arrival the next day, it took maybe 15 minutes for Charlie to discuss with his staff which version would be best suited for my application and to have the turbo assembled. He hooked me up with a guy who lived about 2 miles away and had some tools. This was about noon, by about 8 pm I was testing the install for leaks and was on my way back to camp. Great customer support! Since then, I have put on about 3400 miles driving around Arizona, California and back home to NE Wisconsin. My camper is a ~3000 pound aluminum cargo trailer converted for boondocking. My wife's glam camper weights ~7000. I never haul or pull heavy. The truck is only used to pull the tin cans. I have pulled on roads above 7500', interstate/many 2 lane roads (shunpiker) and all sorts of weather conditions since the S300 has been installed. For me and my scenario, the S300 63/70/84 is GREAT. YMMV! I have no need to ask for more. Of course I do speculate about a 63/73/84; but with ACs, I think Charlie made the right decision. After experimenting with my (brand/hp) tunes, I ended up using my PHP 25hp tune for ~3000 miles. Since I have a zf5, shift characteristics are a moot issue. Basically I have no smoke, EGTs are of no concern, it's much much more quiet, spools sooner (~4 or 5 psi by 1400 rpm) and maintains spool in between gears much better. The turbo spins about 5 seconds after the engine is turned off. I'm not sure how much that affect is the result of the larger/heavier wheels and/or the cartridge bearing? I can feel the 84 housing start to restrict above 2800 rpm. That's not an issue for me. I shift by 2400, I have never NEEDED more. The truck has never pulled this hard. There it is, besides rebuilding the engine last summer, it's the most significant/best mod I have done to the truck. If I had known how much the KC S300 would improve the trucks performance. I would have purchased one as soon as possible. The next step is to have it live tuned. Not because I need it, it's because I want it and I'm curious. Have a good day.
