Our current worktruck is a 99 V10 with 150k miles, we bought it in early December and have just been working the piss out of it. Plowed snow all winter, and then got a flatbed with boxes and has been our main worktruck since then. I put 3-400 miles a week on it, so i'd like to address some issues it has. 1. Lack of power. It is a 5 speed, ECLB, 4wd, and i'd say with the bed and all weighs over 8k. Its not bad to run around empty, but throw a trailer behind it with some weight and it becomes a dog. Anything we can do to give it some more ass? It does average 12-13 mpg's with mostly city driving and a good bit of towing. 2. It has some ticking. One tick sounds like a lifter but is constant, so i'm assuming its an exhaust manifold. The other definitely sounds like a lifter, and comes and go's. How hard/expensive is it to replace the manifolds, and do these engines have lifter issues? 3. Whats a good replacement clutch? Ever since mid-winter the clutch has been making some noise. Some days it will make a grinding noise when the pedal is depressed, other days its a rattle like a broken spring, and some days its completely quiet. It still drives and shifts fine, but something that needs addressed. It is a plow truck and tows often so we need something comparable to the stock clutch. If you have any tips/advice for these engines let us know. We've had a bunch of 5.4's over the years and still have one, but this is our first V10. So far we've had no issues out of it and its made us a ton of money, but we're hoping to sell it in a year or so and get some more diesels.
