The crank has a tone wheel that’s missing a tooth at tdc #1 and the cam sensor has 1 tooth at #1, they cross and tell the computer where #1 is. If I remember right, the crank sensor supplies the voltage for the cam sensor. On Cummins swapped trucks, I have seen where they put a reluctor wheel on the damper and use it for rpm and all the other truck running commands the truck needs.
