Alright guys, so my boss has been hounding me to run my truck in the oilfield in alberta. Lots of dirt roads, rough terrain and hiway. Cold weather to extreme heat. My question is how many of you actually run your trucks for work and how do they stand up? And I would also like to know how many KM/Miles you have on your 6.4 powerstrokes or even a friends. Mine currently has 145,000km or 95,000 miles... drives like a dream and haven't had any issues really... I just don't want to run the crap out of it and have $$$ issues in 6 months from now.

It already has s&b instake, 4" exhaust and H&S tuner which I will run at Stock or Tow while working to keep her cool and not sucking in unwanted dust.

Any input is helpful I just really want to know how tough they are and if I can run it for another 100,000km !!

Delete the egr and dpf/doc. Get a bigger cold air intake from no limit and let her rip. my truck is a work truck in the patch. Sask to Alberta. Has been work from -45 to plus 45. Never had an issue. My biggest recommendation would be to drop your oil every 5,000km religously. Oil is cheap.

178,000km and it has not once been to a dealership or required any repairs other then consumables.

I work my truck everyday, construction, oil field, wherever the road takes me. Lots of towing. This is my second 6.4 and both were the same 85,000 miles on this one and about the same on the other one. Honestly though, if I had the money, I would buy a 7.3 for a work truck. One that wouldn't matter if it got dented or broke. Maybe even a 6.0. Like these other guys said, if they make it worth your while with the pay then it doesn't matter

Use mine for work, not nearly as rough as the oil fields are on a truck but non the less used for work. Has just shy of 300k, hauls everything that gets put on the back, pulls four guys around plus luggage and tools. I normally have 2000 pounds of crap in the box. Spartan 210 tune with intake, turbo back, S&B, EGR Delete and CAC. Truck works good and I've had it in a couple of those "Oh ****" situations where you have to abuse it a bit to get out.

If you're in the oil field, they should be paying you $800-1000/mo to lease your truck, paying for fuel, and paying for all repairs. Otherwise, they can provide me a truck

move south... every company I or my friends have worked for pay for all repairs.

If you're talking about hot shotting? Yeah, different story... but if you're actually working in the field as a technician, etc. they should cover repairs IMO

1.00/km doesn't help if your only laying 2km of pipe a day. Depending on the job requirements is how I'd work the deal out. Sometimes a day rate & fuel is better.

1.00$ a km driven. I got 210,000 km on my truck. I work on the service rigs in southern Saskatchewan. I change oil every 5k. Fuel filters every 10k. Haven't had major problems. Blown up pipe recently. It never left me stranded though.

I've seen how oil patch trucks are treated. You the owner might treat it nice, but the interior will eventually get trashed, dents and scuffs on the exterior, the box will get beat to crap loading and unloading "stuff" all because everyone but the owner sees a work truck.
The advise another poster gave to buy another truck....7.3....for a work truck will leave everyone feeling like a good deal was had. You also have to negotiate an allowance. The KM reimbursement won't work for you because the abuse the truck will go through. If you negotiate a monthly allowance + fuel, maintenance and repairs you'll be left properly compensated.
