I have a 1997 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with 178k on it. I have only had it for 10k miles and haven't had any issues at with the tranny. Two weeks ago I was doing about 75 mph and felt a slip every thirty seconds or so. Not like a engine revving slip. Just a subtle one second slip. Once traffic slowed down, the tranny was in limp mode. It was slamming into gear, flashing OD light. I have that edge chip and it gave me code p1728. I haven't gotten to a shop to do an expensive gauge scan yet. I drove it today for two miles and everything feels fine like nothing ever happened. I have time this week to play with it so, what does anyone suggest to start. I had been planning to buy a strong tranny anyway and I probably still will, but I want to verify and fix this one now before I can replace it down the road.

That code is common on diesel E4ODs. Often it is caused by a slipping torque converter clutch. That is caused by a crack in the apply piston. The fix is a new torque converter.

Thanks Mark. Can you just replace the torque converter? I thought I read that that was a bad idea for some reason.
Thanks
