Injector issues?
This afternoon i bought myself a project/work truck. Its an 01 F-450, ZF-6, 260k miles. The current engine has 130k miles. The story i was told was the guy bought it this spring with some issues. He bought injectors from Auto Zone, and a re-man HPOP from Ford. At the same time he installed a new clutch. Made it 300 miles and a nozzle broke taking out a piston. He took it to a shop where they bought and swapped in a clean, 130k mile engine(not sure on the year). They told him they did a compression test and it checked out good. They slapped on a ton of new parts and threw it in the truck. Since then the truck has had issues. The shop then told him they ran a CCT and #4 failed, so it needed a piston/re-build. Other than that i don't think they did any diagnostic work. At that point he had spent too much money so he decided to sell it, and i now have it. The issue is the truck runs very rough, and is constantly blowing black smoke. Not blue or white, but black. Very hard to start, takes a lot of cranking to get it to fire, but once it fires it'll idle all day long. It also has very poor throttle response and no power. Its just a worthless pig. Hell its tricky to get it going because as soon as you let out on the clutch it lugs down and wants to die. Check engine light is on. So i got it home and threw AE on it. It gave me a P1316(IDM codes detected), and a P1274(#4 injector high to low side open). Ran a buzz test and they all buzzed great, except #4 which was weak. Popped the valve cover off and verified that all the plugs were tight. Still no change. Swapped in a known good IDM thats been sitting here for a while, no change. So then i got curious and popped the solenoid off #4. The small rectangle piece under the solenoid was very loose, so i just spun it tight and lined it up with the solenoid. Ran a buzz test and now #4 was buzzing as strong as the others, but it then gave me codes for 2, 4, and 6. Fired it up and still no change. So knowing that these are "BWD" injectors from a parts store, and that he had issues in the past and now has what should be a good engine in it, i think its all in the injectors? BTW i have a good set of AD's out of a 2000 T444E engine along with good OEM valve cover gaskets and harnesses. Plan is to swap injectors and run a compression test if i get time tomorrow. Just want to make sure i'm heading in the right direction.
