So I got my 1996 F350 in a trade for my old jeep, and ho boy I wasn't prepared for the amount of Jerry rigging I was going to encounter with some of this stuff. I just got the truck running again, but the fella had a direct switch wired to turn on the glow plugs coming off the relay. Now it refuses to run without that switch on but I dont want to burn the plugs out. As a side note I noticed that if I switch it to on the battery draw is tiny compared to when I first got it and had to use it last winter. I replaced the relay and there is no change. Any ideas?

one thing i would do is replace the wiring harness then your glow plugs will work correctly would be the hope. here is a link for the harness

at least this would be your first step, and you step off from there, i also live in Florida i am near fort Myers maybe one day we can hook up and share some ideas mine is a 2000 f550 7.3 and my fried Gary has a 97 f250 7.3 we have pretty much worked all the kinks you can come across. but getting that harness will get you in the right direction. make sure it is for your truck they have several different layouts.

I wonder if you have a bad power supply or fuse to the PCM and by manually running the glow plug relay you are back feeding it

Maybe check fuses first? The fuel bowl heater is a popular one for shorting out the PCM fuse.

I assume there are two switch wires on the Glow plug relay. Just guessing that is what is going on.
