One of my concerns about the EGR location was salted roads which is why I didn't go that route (and the ZF6 has a larger housing but the OP wont have to worry about that), but if you made a splash gaurd, you probably would be fine. Of course even if the pipe going into the DP rusts, it wouldn't be too bad to weld another piece in except if it failed where it goes into the DP.
