The factory coolant requires SCA's -supplemental coolant additives. These must be monitored and maintained, then the system must be thoroughly flushed and coolant changed on a routine basis. Even then, the SCA's tend to 'fall out' and form a sand-like substance that can erode cooling system parts and cause short waterpump life among other problems. By switching to ELC, you no longer need to add/monitor SCA's and coolant-change intervals are between 350,000 and 500,000 miles. I've been using CAT ELC and get it pre-mixed for around $10/gal - so this 'mod' is a real time and money saver in the long run. Cups are about $100/set and are easy to swap with the engine out!
