wheel spacer and lug protrusion through the nut

i dont know what everyones "rule of thumb" is on lug protrusion through the nut but the company that did all the work on my formans 2016 superduty claims that as long as there is 8 full turns on the nut as it is tightened it is fine regardless of lug protrusion..

i was always told that a minimum of 3 full threads of the lug, or any bolt and nut combo, was supposed to be sticking out for propper fitment and safety..

this to me is unexceptional. what do you all think? pretty sure i know the answer but i have never heard their rule of thumb!

10 full turns of the nut will be fine. It won't pass anyone's inspection with no protrusion but that's a different subject. The first 2-3 threads carry about 75-80% of the load. I can't remember the number specifically but that's close.

There's no protrusion on the nuts on my rear axle u-bolts...they're flush with the bolt itself. They're torqued to spec and have never moved though.

10 is what I was always told and what I stick with today. I don't know the basis for that number but it's always seemed reasonable.

im thinking it would make the lugs flush with the nut if i could get that many turns. but not happening.

those are really short. My studs actually stick through the nut about 3/8".

I always say it needs to be flush at the minimum.

Looks like you going to need longer studs.

i know factory protrusion is about 3/8s of an inch on everything i own..

I've always been told that the diameter of the bolt is how far the nut has to go on.

That is accurate. The only reason for protrusion is an overabundance of caution.
And it's easy to see.

I've always been told three threads too, and was told because the first thread or two on most bolts are tapered slightly. I don't think this is the case with wheel studs. On our BOP studs the nuts are the same thickness as the diameter of the studs. A 2" diameter stud has a nut that is 2" thick. They are fine threaded too. Our Lloyd's register BOP inspector guru wanted full engagement. He didn't really like it, but as long as he could see or feel the stud above the nut, he'd accept it. I'm sure the design and his insistence is a bit overkill and insurance. However, only little things like people's lives depended on them...nothing like lug nuts.

Most assuredly sarcasm. I'd take the spacers out or install longer studs. My OCD wouldn't let me not see threads. My wife and daughters ride in my pickup. I'm glad I'm not in NY, but it makes me wonder how many vehicles are rung around thinking it's no big deal.
