Options for Compounds with a 38R

For all of you turbo guru's out there, what do you consider good options to provide an atmospheric turbo for a streetable set of compounds that will allow for towing a 12,500# 5er?

I'm planning on going to Swamps 400/400 injectors and, more tha likely, BTS dual HPOP's and IPR's.

I'm more interested in the DD application than towing. I need to be able to tow, but I can live with some sacrifices in that area.

I believe he lost some responsiveness over the GT45 he had previous to that 55. He towed etc with the 45.

Gt47/38r was the first combo. 45 would be a little small,imo. Same setup that Aggie used. Similar trucks, no doubt. Charles is running the gt55/38r combo now. I think a leaky.manifold was the culprit in spoolup issues. As in, one.whole.bank was basically escaping into the atmosphere. Unless he told you something different!?

GT47 is what charles was running but just for chits and grins there is a 96mm airesearch for sale on craigslist for 500 in columbia missouri....

Bullseye S483 s488 , gt4788 , forced inductions gt88 , gt91

400/400s a bit much to be towing with but with enough tuning I may be able to be done.

I would skip the 38r though.. Too much bs to incorporate a wastegate.. I'd look into a t4 setup s362 fmw , s364 , s366 something from wop or bell turbo

Id stick with the 38r all you have to do is machine the housing then weld a pipe in for your gate, on top of that the 38r should have a gate itself in the factory position to help with backpressure if im thinking correctly.. Do not be shy with your gates the bigger the better

Chuckles did the 38/47 combo with 300/200s and did 591 on fuel with minimal smoke and managable egts.

Claimed the ability to tow more then the trucks capacity until it burned down every part of the drive line.

I was thinking of sticking with the 38R for a bit just because I already have one and I might have to work with the sticks I already have til I can save up for the bigger ones. I want 400/400's because I've learned my lesson with injectors the hard way. Buy bigger than you might need or want right now cuz you can always tune big ones down. You can't tune 250/100's up to anything else.

What are the s4xx turbos that are comparable to a GT47? Anything with GT on it costs so dang much.

With 400/400's I'd be looking for something with an 88-91mm compressor wheel and a 92-100mm turbine in a 1.20-1.32 housing an s480 may work well since it has quite a large turbine at 96mm and there about $950

Are you planning on doing the twins yourself, or having a company do it for you? If so, who do you plan on using?

Or just forget about stupid big injectors and just go with something reasonable like swapping out the 100% nozzles for 200% :shrug:

Restructuring your goals for something realistic would be much easier wouldn't it?

Agreed.. 300/200 would be a nice setup hell of a lot more street friendly and tuning friendly.. I won't even consider bigger then 200 untill I can tune **** my self and be good at it. Which Probibly won't happen so Id stick with 200's unless you want the headache.. Swapping parts is easy getting tuned right is by far exponentially harder

I'm all about 400/400 injectors and getting a do everything setup - BUT ARE YOU SURE that you are willing to put in the time, headache, frustration, of dialing in a set of these injectors for daily duties? I'm well aware of some of the issues that you have had getting your current setup dialed in and keeping it there and wish to express my concerns about such an ambitious setup without very intimate knowledge about the functionality of the systems as well as the tuning aspects.

In other words - I believe what you want can most certainly be done - but take note that the only people that HAVE done so also happen to do their own tuning to make it happen to a level where they are happy with it.

Just my 2 cents.

It's gonna depend on where I'm at as to who does it. I'm not too far from PHP's shop ~2hr's, so if I get everything together while I'm here in Ga., I'll have them build it and get Bill to live tune it.
