Some clarification. The ones I sell to customers, the majority are because of cracked pistons. The rest are upgraded. I sell more to dealers and other shops than I do to a walk in/call in customer. Most of the time we have no idea what is wrong when dealers buy or have us drop-ship because there is no interaction with the end user.

Get one.

You take a gamble with any vehicle. There are the worst investment, but are a necessity. For granted some are more reliable then others.

I have a 6.4, run 300 tune, and don't baby it. I do always let it warm up before moving it though. Even if I'm late, she still gets warmed up. Does this help? No idea.

I would buy another in a heart beat. The power is unreal for a tuned and delete truck.

Not trying to discourage anyone at all here. Just stating the facts. These trucks are great vehicles and great engines overall. I have seen and know lots of people who have over 200k with no major issues. It all depends on how you take care of it and a little bit of luck.

I pulled Steve's truck apart with 182k on it (All stock) and the pistons looked gorgeous. I pulled another 08 with 125k apart (Tuned for 100k) and they looked great as well.

That's good to know. It will be getting pistons and the bottom end refreshed for peace of mind.

Not to scare anyone just my experience. Wouldn't trade my 6.4 for anything. http://youtu.be/dGj2bIighQ4 This is where I'm at now. Deleted at 42K currently at 71K. I have been running, Snow Performance MPG Max since 41K until 69.5K with H&S, S&B and 5" DP back, when 71mm, Z-max, 6.0 manifolds, down-pipe, no limit CAI and cold side/elbow was installed and wouldn't get above 1200, Snow kit left unhooked. I have maybe heard this sound 4-5 times since my grandmother bought the truck and after I bought it from her. Just curious if my current condition and this sound is related. http://youtu.be/T36UNNm5eNw

I would say that you have a cracked piston with that much blow by coming out of your ccv. What codes are you getting on your tuner?

#2 contribution/balance, #2 misfire, #7 contribution/balance, yea id say so. Just curious how everything else looks. I driving cross country and cruising at 85. Idk how long it was like it is. Middle of the night and no one around. Just notice a cloud behind me thought it was road salt. Passed another car some time later and saw the cloud coming out of my tail pipe and took cruise off and it started shaking. No vibration or anything at 2K just 100 deg higher EGTs. And this puddle after being parked 30secs. (Pic) MPD CCV

My buddy's Dmax did the same thing (well he ain't a friend cause he drives a Dmax) in that he was jusst cruising the same speed for about an hour when symptoms started. We figure the piston was already partially cracked and the crack got big enough to cause symptoms when he was cruising.

yeah the cracks dont happen over night, i would suspect they are pretty small for a while and then when they finally break it happens fairly fast.

I was having a weird idle issue, which quite after I found the cable was loose between the battery's. WeekendWarriorfsw32 has been helping me from the start and when I asked of the idle concern which never acted up, he was concerned about the blow by. Then but I hadn't changed since I added the MPD CCV kit. He said that a previous truck had the same blow by after adding CCV and a similar setup to mine and cracked a piston 1K later.

I blame him for everything, lol he jinxed me....

piston discussion

I know this isn't an introduction thread so I will get down to it.
The pics of the cut up piston are out of my truck #8 let loose on a back road around 75mph not completely hammering on it just attempting to make clean quick pass
106,000 mi on truck
tuned h&s on 300, dpf delete, intake 4" exh that's all the mods the truck it had
However I think the problem actually gave me some small warning the day before on a 400 mi trip when I noticed mpg went from 19.8 h.c. to mid 16mpg
that trip was all easy highway miles
Upon further inspection of this piston I have another theory, I may not have been a thin casting but the crack acted like a torch tip and focused the flame front into the cooling galley and then right out the ring grooves.
get new .030 over pistons and with my continuing good luck this is how they came out of the box
