35" tires cause a lot of drag; noticeable decrease in power?

Out of curiousity, has anybody noticed a decrease in power/speed by going to 35" tires?

Is there a lot of power/acceleration by going from 35's to smaller tires?

It's all about physics my friend.

You've jacked with the gearing of the truck by increasing size of tire. This will cause the truck to be more sluggish than if you ran a stock size tire. Reduce the gearing or deal with the power loss.

There will be an improvement in the performance with the smaller tires, but how noticable is hard to say. These are diesel engines, not Honda Accords

I recently went from 285/75/16 to a 315/75/16. 315 is a 35. Yes it does make a BIG difference. I took a hit on performance and mileage! I love the look but not so happy with the power loss, mileage loss, and I'm sure it's not so good for the Trans either.

I went from stock 265/75/16 tires to 315-75-16 Duratracs. Also leveled the truck and added X-code springs for 4" of lift in the front.

I lost 1 mpg.

There is a *slight* loss of torque when you start to move, but nothing substantial or inhibiting. Not even noticeable once I turn the chip on. She'll peel off the Duratracs all day if I let her!

I havent noticed a lot of performance (power) loss on 35's as compared to stock. Now fuel economy thats another story.
EDIT: :doh:I just noticed this was in the 7.3 section, disregard my comment LOL LOL

I've always lost power and mileage, even more noticeable pulling. I never cared because I like the looks.
FYI I have the stock 20's which are said to be a 34.1x11 and 35x12.5, I lose 2-4 mpg empty and I run a Stretch of road, with the 34's I hit 102-105 and with 35's I hit 98-100. This is a average since 2006 too. Hope it helps.

This is what will kill you about tires. If you don't change your gear ratio, regardless of power, physics WILL win. You have to rev higher in a given gear to get to the next. It is that simple.

Only tried stock tires one time and it was a heck of a difference from the 35's I've been running especially up top. It buries the speedo mighty quick with the cookies cutters compared to 12.5's.

Problem is, I had 33's long before I had my 35's, so I cant compare to stock sized tires at ALL.

But between 33's OR my 35's, I still get 18mpg all-around if I dont drive like a jackass. I can also spin my LSD'd 35's to smithereens when its wet out or on any kinda stone. Rolling burnouts are easy w/ meaty 35" mud tires when on stone gravel or dirt.

WHich made me wonder, if I had the stock sized tires would I even be able to hook up in the rain/stone/dirt???

Going from stock height and 285's to a 6" lift with 37x13.5's on my '02 made me gain 3/10's in the quarter mile. I changed from 3.73's to 4.56's to try and compensate some and while it helped driveability a ton, it gained zero back in the quarter mile.

315 has absolutely nothing to do with 35" nominal tire size. God I hate it.when people.say that. My 34" waist size is a 13d shoe size. See how dumb that sounds?

315 is 315mm. The width of that particular tire. Divide by 25 and it'll tell you the width of your tire.

My truck has 265k miles on it and has been lifted the entire time. I went to 35s last summer and before that i never went smaller than a 37. Tuned and towing for the first 245k. As in never unhooked from the trailer. Trans was fine. Maintenance is key.

I couldnt imagine running a 7.3 with 4r100 and 3.73 gearing with smaller than a 33" tire. Stock size the ***kin thing is screaming to tow at 70mph. Add some power and 35s are the ideal.size for an otherwise stock truck. I in fact prefer how the 35s stretch out the duration of shifts and keep the.charger loaded. With some moderately larger injectors(175/80) the truck was perfect.

35&37 are perfect tires for a superduty. I can see how some guys would prefer a level or mild lift and 33s too.

Nitpicking a little bit here, aren't ya?

I have 315-75 Duratracs.....which is less than 1/2" shorter than a 35x12.5" tire.

*MOST* of the 315 tires are 315-75 (34.6") that I have seen.

315 has nothing to do with 35". You dont understand either?

The aspect ratio of 75 that you mentioned is fairly useless as well when you dont include wheel diameter.

Nitpicking? Not even a little.

Ok...point taken.

And yes, I understand the how the aspect ratio works. I was simply stating how the majority of 315-XX-XX tires I have seen out there are roughly 35".

Someone asks me how big my tires are... I'm gonna say "35's."

I'm not gonna ramble off "315-75-16E" or "34.6"!"

In my 7.3 I had no problems. I had 4.10s tho. Truck loved 35s. My 6.0 on the other not so much. My trans always wants to shift lost some low end. Mileage went down.... Now the tires I had before measured 34.5" "275/60r20" and the truck loved them could smoke them all day long. While yes turning the larger tire is gonna take more power the weight of the tire and wheel combo can make a huge difference. According to my dealer who could be blowing smoke.... My wheels "20x10 hostages" weigh in at around 40lbs the toyo mt in 35x12.50r20 weighs in around 80lbs... Now that's a 120lbs a wheel and tire.... My stock setup weighed... Close to 90lbs I believe maybe less.... That's a lot of weight to turn ....

I was going to say the same thing. Just one of my pet peeves.
