4.30 Gears or 2015 Billet wheel turbo first?

HPGod, why not tow in 5th gear? It'll put you in the powerband and you can do 65 instead of 75+. Then you can just get a billet 61mm turbo and skip the gears.

5th is a bit too low. My tires are only 34.5" tall. With 3.55's 5th would probably be great.

34" tall tires net you the equivalent of another 10% Overdrive. Basically 70-71mph at 2000. Pretty much perfect for towing with 4.30's.

3.73 's give you 63mph in 5th and 80mph in 6th at 2000rpm

4.30 give you 54mph in 5th and 70 in 6th.
I'll probably end up doing the turbo first, more so from a reliability stand point. If that doesn't cut it, then I'll do a gear swap this summer.

its all about the rpm-- you'll eventually want the gear.

Yes and no. From an unloaded mileage standpoint yes. I had 4.10's in my 6.4 but running a full 35" tire it's not bad. These newer motors take rpm's just fine and if it's better when towing that's all I care about. I'm trying to find a rear dually axle from a '06 to swap in so all I need to swap is the front gears. But in my case unloaded I could use 4.30's haha 75 should be my max speed limit. My H&s has my limiter set at 85 right now lol stock is 96

You expanded more on what I was thinking when I gave the short answer. I was considering his application of being hooked 80% of the time with a big tire, but agree that unloaded the 4.30s would suck on the highway.

My dad has an 11 450 pickup with the 4.30s and I have a 350 with the 3.55s. His dually all stock sees a max of maybe 15 mpg and that's not towing and not driving around real fast. His truck at 65 is right around 2k rpm. Which is great for towing but not for fuel mileage. I can get about 16.5 out of mine doing mostly city driving if I'm easy on it with the 3.55s. And sometimes 18 on the highway if I don't have a head wind. The 350 is lifted and on 35s right now.

Compared to stock height, stock wheels.

Here's what I pull. The 38' gooseneck is fairly heavy. 8000lbs, plus 8000lbs of cars, plus 1000lbs race gas.

I showed this photo to my fiancée and mentioned that I wanted to get a GTR again... She laughed at me. I am glad that I am on the ipad, it makes cleaning up the drool easier.

Is that trailer one that lowers to load the cars? Never see anyone using them much around here

Bringing this back from the dead... The turbo works and the truck pulls like a freight train, but the truck still wants to downshift on small hills, unless I'm doing around 80mph. 4:10's would be absolutely perfect, but it's damn hard to justify such a small change. I'm going into the rear diff this summer to install a Detroit true Trac. The factory LSD isn't up to the task of 35's and extra power. It wants to roast the inner duals on corner exits. I ran a true Trac on my 05 6.0 with 37's and 4:56 gears. Such glorious, controlled drifts.

Is it down shifting cause your slowing down on small hills or just kicking down a gear when it has to work a little? I used to put my 550 in manual mode so it wouldnt shift.

It's just downshifting into 5th. Not a big deal, but it wouldn't shift if it was carrying 200 more rpm. It usually doesn't downshift if I keep it over 80mph. Which is impressive in itself for pulling 17,000lbs.

I wouldn't waste the money on gears. If it has the power I'd just throw it in manual mode or maybe see if it can be adjusted with a custom tow tune. Truck looks awesome BTW.

Thank you. You're right. I should prob just slow down a bit and run it in 5th.
Or...37's on 22's, then run in 5th. Haha

You can adjust the trans tuning to your liking to help out to a certain extent. I have 4:10's on 37's and mine would keep downshifting way too much. Sometimes out of the blue. Got my trans tune adjusted to the point that I'm pretty happy with it now.
