I have a 97 with the manual 4x4. When I got the truck the 4hi and 4low lights worked fine. Then they started working intermittently, and now they don't work at all. I have replaced all the dash bulbs. Is there a position switch or sensor that turns the lights on? Not a huge deal, just a little thing that bothers me.

I would crawl underneath and look for a loose connector.

Yeah, I have done that and didnt see anything glaringly obvious, but I will definately take another good look. Is the 4x4 part of the main harness or is it seperate?

It could also be that the transfer case switch is bad.

What is the function of this switch? I should have said this from the beginning, but the 4 wheel drive itself works fine. Is this switch just to indicate that it is in 4wd?

The switch has 3 functions. The light blue wire is grounded in 4h or 4l which turns on the dash light and also grounds a pin on the ABS module. The light blue with black tracer wire is grounded in 4l turning on the low range dash light and it grounds a pin on the PCM. I am assuming this is for trans shifting on an auto at a minimum. I think you want to get this fixed.

I could be very wrong here, but I think the sensor is on the top of the transfer case. It's part of the main harness. I believe this to be the case because my 2wd has that plug hanging down not connected to anything.

I think I may have found it on Rock Auto ... a ford part number of E7TZ7E440A. From the picture it looks like it might have the correct number of wires and the description sounded about right. Either this evening or sometime this weekend I will try and get under it and see for sure where and what it is.

I think this guy might be the culprit. Only 2 wires though, and tight quarters for a wrench.

Got it out today ... with a bit of a heatache, scare, and huge sigh of relief. Will call the dealership tomorrow to get one. I will let you know when I get it and put back in. By the way, the part number I got off of the part I pulled out is e6tz-7e440-a. It has two wires that come off of it. One was blue, and the other was pretty hard to see ... both were quite dirty.

Thanks for the Tom. Ordered the part from the dealership, and they said they should have it tomorrow. I will update with the results.

Got the part today, and that is the part number the dealership got me. It was $40 bucks, which is twice as much as I found the old part number for online ... hopefully this one lasts another 12 years. I included a picture of the part and just for my appeasement, a picture of the dash lights on.

THANKS for everyones help. I really appreciate it!
