6.4 Engine Parameters

Greetings,

Just slapped an H&S mini max on my 6.4 last night with a DPF delete (could not believe how hard it was to separate the DPF from the muffler). Haven't even installed my S&B intake yet and I took it for a test drive in order to do a re-learn.

Needless to say on my 3rd 0-80 run (set on wild), I proceeded to scare the crap out of myself and my passenger. We immediately realized this was now the fastest truck wed ever been in.

My question is, whats the best way to monitor the engine? I was hoping I could do it with the mini, but it doesnt seem to have gauges. Should I plum an EGT just like all my older trucks? I keep hearing about monitoring rail pressure? Lastly, is the mini max supposed to stay on after the truck is turned off? Do you guys leave it plugged in or do you mount it?
Thanks in advance.

The mini max should monitor everything you need, and with a 6.4 there is a factory egt gauge plugged in you don't have to run any other gauges...as for how it's set up I'm not sure I've never personally used a mini maxx

For the on/off function there is a wiring harness that you connect to the black box you put in the obdII that you hook up to a ground and key on power and will power the monitor only when the truck is on

Yeah, the Mini Maxx was pretty good for gauges. It monitors everything that you NEED to keep track of. Just play with the setting, and GAUGE SETUP for a while, and you can change them all up and monitor as many as 4 at a time.

As Josh said, there is a small wire that you need to power it off with the key. I am not sure if it is included with the box, or available seperately.

Good stuff. So eot I assume is engine oil temps (what range are you guys seeing on that), but Im not sure what ect (engine coolant temp?). I have to put on the engine coolant filter I got from sinister along with the egr delete and S&B cold air intake yet, as well.

On my black maxx, I monitor egts, oil temp, trans temp, and coolant. Oil temp and coolant should be around 190-200ish. Give or take a couple degrees. My trans runs in the ball park of 170. Hope this helps.

Nice! I would definitely watch trans temp if you tow at all. I tow a lot over the summer, and I found that my trans was getting hot during city driving (like in the 220F range). I installed a trans cooler with a fan that I can turn on and off during city driving.

i had the egt, boost, eot and ect monitored for quite a while. now that im confident the truck will operate in the basic engine parameters im now monitoring boost, ebp, eot and fuel pressure. i want to see the other numbers and get a good idea of where everything is before i do more mods. i would like to get a dash daq cause it dispalys all the gauges i want to see at once but thatll probably come later.

Back Pressure seems to be a real issue with these trucks, I was surprised how quickly BP shoots up.

My trans seems to stay around 165-170, I noticed that the defuel setting straight from H&S is setup to defuel at like 130 degrees, not sure what thats all about.

factory designed the egr to relieve bp so deleting or turning it off will of course result in an increase.

i think the mini max reads absolute so after calculations i have seen any bad numbers with my mods. i could be wrong on the actual/absolute on the hs.

even guys with 71s arent seeing bad bp except for wot hot tune runs. they are reccomending a wastegate.

Great info, from what Ive read after an EGR/DPF delete these things are tanks. Not much different than the Killer Dowel Pin and the 53 blocks on the Cummins. I suppose I shouldn't be to considered with back pressure then, thanks

H&S does not read absolute. It reads actual. Key on engine off It reads 0. Absolute readings would have barometric pressure so Key on engine off it would read 14-14.7 depending on your altitude and you would subtract that from the backpressure reading.

70psi on the mini max would be equal to 84-84.7psi on the spartan or sct

ok then i stand corrected. somewhere along the way i misinterpreted and got confused with the reading and doing calculations with ebp on a mini. so i should add 14.7 psi to whatever its reading. if so then ebp is a concern at high throttle. i should do some data logging.
