Getting ready to dig into a existing problem. I can deal with little heat tull it hits the 20's.

From the beginning...

Back in the summer, with the A/C on, the engine fan would kick on with the oil temp around 130* on a 80* summer day.

Then soon following started barely coming out of the vents. Would work, then not, work, then not etc... the blower fan would sound normal, but no air came out.

Fast forward to this past week.

When I turn the defroster and heat combo on, I hear a thunk and the motor draws down. Going down the road you can feel a slight lose of power off and on. And again, nothing coming out of the floor vent or defroster, though the noise is there.

Turn it to straight defrost and it's fine. I have a vaccum leak somewhere but now I feel I have a compressor issue.

Do these go hand and hand or do I have two separate problems?

I would say your bearing in the AC compressor is going out. The bearing in the pulley is just an idler until the clutch engages. When you turn on defrost the AC unit run to dry out the air to the defrost. But you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
