AIS Imtake - Worth It?

Wife allotted me $500 to spend on my truck for my birthday. I have an 02 crew cab that's stock. Would it be worth it to spend over half of my budget for the AIS on a stock setup? Would it make it sound or run any better? The best price I've found is $299 of riffraff.

Save yourself $250 and just do the 6637 mod with a Donaldson filter.

Seriously.

That should save you $450 for an exhaust or a Hydra.

I strongly considered that but I like the stock look and the fact there is an actual box. I also don't want to eliminate the battery mount.

AIS is a great quality filter setup. It is quiet and factory fit and finish

6637 can be done much cheaper. You can purchase a standard battery tray for the drivers side to have a clean look. It will filter great, it will be louder. You could get a quality set of tunes with what you have left over from your budget...if you're into that sort of thing.

Id do the 6637 filter and get 4" aluminized exhaust for 200 bucks and then see if you can get a race tune for 200 bucks.

Honestly ***k that ais setup...its cute but thats it.

I put an AIS in my mom's EX. 80 eco tune, bone stock otherwise. Unless she floors it from a stop there is zero smoke. If all you have is a chip. I prefer the AIS over the 6637. Engine bay looks way Cleaner. You can clean the engine easier. Etc.

If I was doing no mods I sure as hell wouldnt switch from a stock box to that on a 15 year old truck for no apparent reason.

He has 500$ to spend. Id turn up the fuel, get an exhaust, and get just a filter.

To each his own...

Clips were broken on my mom's intake. Plus my mom's hates loud turbo sounds. AIS is nice and quiet.

Frx, exhaust, or hydra would be in my list before the AIS That is If your filter box is serviceable. It prob won't make a difference in performance, it will filter better. As far as sound it won't be louder and I can't tell if it's much quieter than stock.

Don't forget a pyrometer guys if you are running the tunes. This is what I would do. DIY 6637, muffler delete, pyrometer and then used TS chip with two good custom tunes on it. Not sure what custom tunes cost for a TS chip though. A DD or heavy tow tune and then performance tune would be good I guess if you are just paying by the tune. There are some guys that tow in their performance tunes and then just drive by the pyrometer though (CSIPSD?). Then hope your transmission stays together. :)

Tow in race tune...even with stg 2 injectors..

Gauges are good but on a stock truck id not be afraid to get a tune, an exhaust, and get a filter upgrade although i highly doubt a stock turbo/tuned setup would be overpowering a stock airbox.

I've always wondered what kind of temps one could hit with stock injectors, a race tune and pulling a good load. The pyrometer just seems like a good idea to me especially if your up-pipes start leaking. I agree that the stock air box should be sufficient as long as it is serviceable.

I developed a slight up-pipe leak and could still only get 1350 MAX. Unloaded tho.

Stock injectors, 38r, torn intake boot, leaking exhaust manifold and dragging front caliper i saw 1400 on a 6" lift 35" tire truck. Fixed the bot, the brakes, and towed 24k lbs up grade for 7 miles never hit 1k but it was in a tow tune that time.

Good stuff. That's why I think a two tune setup is the way to go especially if you don't have the pyro. That 38r might drop egts ~200°. Stock turbo will not fair as well.

I really would do an exhaust. Then tunes. Stock turbo and tunes wont overpower a stock airbox. Far from it.

Truck has a Walker BTM muffler. I was planning to add an f650 dash kit with pyro and fuel gauges but it's sounding like egts aren't going to be an issue with a mostly stock setup and a tune? If so I can avoid the gauges and do a Hydra. Towing will be minimal and nothing over a 22' offshore boat.

There's a couple things you can do that's very cheap. You can eliminate the heater in the intercooler pipe and replace it with a dodge oil plug. I eliminated the ebv tube and tied to the map. Replace the the pedestal with non ebpv and hi flow outlet. Definately change the exhaust. 4" downpipe straight back no muffler. The pedestal and outlet if you shop around can get for a couple hundred bucks. Or mod yours for a lot cheaper. I did this to mine and it did wonders. Maybe you could slip and get a couple more hundred outta the wife. Gauges are a must,at least tranny and pyro. TS chip with all that and you've got a hot rod!
