Sooo, I noticed a nice grinding/groaning noise coming from the front end the other day. Not sure what it was, I started doing some troubleshooting. It's noticeable above 40 - you can hear it slower than that, but it's hard to pick up unless you know what to listen for. It's significantly louder in 4WD, but I can hear it in 2WD as well.

I unlocked/locked both hubs, one at a time, and the noise seems to follow the front left hub.

Does this follow some of ya'lls experience with hubs going out?

Thanks!

Do they still work?

Many times I see the centering ball in the double cardan joint get a fuzz loose and cause a rattle noise that gets worse with speed.

And yes, the drive line still rotates in 2WD....especially in the frigid cold.

They work locked and in auto.

I usually leave them in lock all the time in winters - when I put the left side in auto the noise goes away...

Thats odd..

I might have a spare hub you can try out, but if its locked - it locked. Not much going on inside a hub that can cause a noise when locked in.

Have you checked the wheel joints (u-joints)?
