It's been a crazy weekend.....Friday the water pump failed after 27k, and Saturday the drive shaft came out around 60mph with only a few seconds of vibration. I have yet to crawl under the truck, had my baby girls with me, so I just called in a tow. I'll try to figure it out this evening and post some more pics...

Take the shaft to a driveshaft shop. Have them spec it out. It could be out of ballance. Also see how much they would charge to remove the harmonic ballancer and ballance the driveshaft. The one by me charges 150 to rebuild the driveshaft, that includes removing the harmonic ballancer and reballancing the driveshaft.

might want to consider a 1 piece drive shaft.

I used these guyshttp://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/Truckhtml/Ford.html years ago for a 1 piece in a lifted truck I had and it was the strongest part of the drive train. There was also a forum member on another forum that ordered a 1 piece from them a few weeks ago and was very impressed.

Their a little spendy, probably around $400 when all said and done but well worth it if you have the coin. I don't think you will need a CV shaft because your truck is far from lifted so a simple 2 joint shaft would get the job done.

Shoot me a PM if you want a link to the thread on the other forum.

I could find anything at the carrier bearing that would lead me to believe that it was the cause. Several of believe that a u-joint retainer cap must have failed, seems random, but that's what it looks like. The carrier bearing is solid, and losing a retainer cap makes the most sense. Two bolts on one side of the u-joint are sheared, so I ordered a new pinion took, and caps and bolts. The shaft will get balanced and we will see what happens...

That sucks! I had mine come apart years ago on my 99, broke just out of the Tcase and took out the tranny case because it was wipping around at 70mph...

Looks just like the strap failed.

Roughly $180 from Ford house for new pinion yolk and straps. Driveline shop called today, drive shaft survived the road rash, new u-joints, carrier bearing, straightening and balancing is $220. Between that and the waterpump, been an expensive week for a "paid for" truck. I hope to have all my parts in hand by the weekend.

All in all though, that was pretty cheap considering how expensive it could have been. Normally when a truck throws a driveshaft at that speed, your talking ALOT more coin! Glad it will be a quick repair though.

Did something similar in my jeep few weeks ago(was being dumb and pulling a heavy load thou). Got a little hot and melted a end cap/something on the ujoint and it failed and came apart beating and banging on everything. Cost me 100 to get a new slip yoke and ujoint so i got out cheap also.

Got it all buttoned up Saturday morning, all seems good now. The drive shaft was balanced as a complete assembly, and the harmonic balancer was deleted. Now I have a few more grease zerts to concern myself with. Finally got around to getting the 203 stat outta my truck as well.
