d66 for compounds?

If you wastegated the d66 would it be up to par for a compound setup?
I will be running 300/200s

Im looking to use a 80mm turbo as the atmosphere.

Dunno how tough a d66 is but i bet it would not be a great idea should your gate happen to fail once i think the d66 would not handle that at all. It would have to be a very large gate too. It can be done i have heard of guys running a stock turbo with a s480 in front of it, think he was running 250/100's though dunno about cleaning up those 300/200's.

People use a 38r in a compound set up. I don't know how much of a difference the ball bearings make for it over the journal bearings.

38r is alot tougher turbo but anything can be done with the proper amount of gating..

It seems like a small injector to compound I think you maybe better off running a s364 with a s480 gives u a big enough turbine wheel to keep everything happy and drive pressures low

The d66 uses a stronger bearing than just a normal van turbo or gtp38. They've proven it to hold to what a 38r is.

The D66 uses the SAME cartridge repair kit as a stock charger, the only modifications are to the CW, TW, and turbine housing. I wouldn't recommend using this as a HP charger in a twin kit unless you are ready to blow up both turbos and start over.

I can't find where I had saw that it was a different bearing in the d66 vs the stock. Could be wrong about that but I could have swore they used a different bearing when they rebuilt it.

You don't "need" compounds to do that, but anything north of 600 is going to want a built bottom end.

Im going to build it myself. Isnt there more power to be made on twins? I dont want a slow spooling truck either

Yeah 600 hp with a 7.3 means built bottom end if your after reliability.

The D66 MIGHT come with 360* journal bearings where as stock uses 270*. If the D66 dont come with that then Im pretty sure its an option. There are several companies out there making a 66mm drop in turbo for the 7.3. Beans D66 happens to be the most popular. Most of the other comparable 66mm turbos like the D66 use the 360* bearing. The center section is the same so Even if its not offered from Beans it can be done.

I think IF PROPERLY gated, with the 1.15 A/R exhaust housing, the D66(or comparable) can be used in a compound setup. An S480 or S475 would be good atmosphereic chargers. A 400/300, 300/200, 400/400 would all be good injector choices with that setup. Proper tuning would be the KEY to it all working. I would prefer the 400/300. VERY performance capable injector with the ability to detune it greatly. and the 300% nozzle instead of a 400 or 200. Keeps injection pressure up and has huge power potential. But its not quite at that "go big or go home" nozzle like a 400% + typically is.

Ive just never seen it done WITH a D66. Maybe with the proper gating, the right atmosphereic, and the good 360* bearings it would work...?

If your wanting to grow into 400/400 I would choose something with a bigger hotside than a d66 and fir that big step up to a 88mm or bigger atmosphere.. Trust me there are no issues spooling that big atmosphere in compounds. I'm with Charles on his statement that I don't think you can put to big of an atmosphere on these trucks..

Hence the charger setup I listed above s364/s366 and s480 turbine sides are bigger and will keep drive pressures better

What kind of a/r should i run Wastegated of course. With running a 66 vs 64 primary wht will be the difference between them? And is a s400 80mm inducer big enough for 400/300s?
