exhaust wrap vs powder coating for up pipes

Since powder coating will cost $150-200 I was considering doing the exhaust wrap that'll cost around 60 for the uppipes. Just wondering if the the welds or the flex section will eventually crack or break wrapping it.

I tried ceramic coating, never noticed a difference other than less money in my pocket. I've used header wrap and it seems to be okay. If the pipes aren't the right material they will eventually crack thou.

I wrapped my downpipe and partially wrapped my up pipes. Theoretically keeping the heat inside the exhaust will help spool up and keep engine bay temps down.

i wrapped mine on my 7.3 did ok when the motor was out a few weeks ago i noticed i had "cooked" the wrap was very hard and would crack when you touched it. IDK if it was the stupid high egts or what but im just running bare pipe now

They are lightly used Elite uppipes.



Should I cover the whole pipe or try to avoid welds and flex section?

Coat them inside and out, then wrap 'em.
Don't worry aboout the bellows, or welds...I have my manifolds, up pipes, hot pipe...EVERYTHING ceramic coated. Only wrapped the up pipes, and hot pipe afterwards for even more heat retention.

Wrapping ceramic coated piping kills the coating after a couple years though.

Don't coat or wrap the bellows.

As for spool up, I can't say if it helps for I wrappedy pipes when I did my whole build. When going with a large setup it's best to think ahead and do all you can to help spool up. Even if it doesn't help spool up, it gives me piece of mind.

I think my biggest concern with up pipes is using high quality material. Coatings and wraps will most of the time just burn off because of the extreme heat. I would def. coat the turbine housings and wrap the hot pipe and part of the down pipe. The hot pipe, not only to keep heat off of things under the hood, but it may help with heat/energy loss. The down pipe mainly to keep heet off of things under the hood of things touching the pipe.

Most people who wrap their parts are trying to hide nasty fabrication. lol I would only use header wrap on compound kits, etc where the exhaust runs close to parts that can melt/burn.

^^ exactly what I mean. The hot pipe in between turbos and down pipe is a good example. Esp if you are remote mounting the large turbo and have a 5" down pipe coming off of it. There are a lot of electrical wires, AC hosing and what not close to the hot pipes.... I'm coating my 6.0 manifolds and leaving the up pipes bare. I dont think wrap will stand up to them very well anyway
