I saw a guy on youtube do this and he says he hasn't had any issues in the last 3 yrs since doing it and I just wonder if any one else has done this? If so how much did it help or hurt? He plumbed in an external oil cooler to help cool the motor oil by running a hose from a port on the filter base/oil cooler to the front of the truck to a large cooler, then back to the drain plug on the side of the block right above the oil pan. The plug you take out if you want to see inside and see if you have PMR's or Forged rods. On hot summer days this would be nice if it dropped it 10 to 20* but if this only gets you 5 to 8 like he said his did, I can't see spending $500 to $600 on all the good supplies needed to plumb this in. Anyone else?

My personal feelings on external oil coolers are they’re typically more headaches than they’re worth. You’re putting another heat source up front, therefore the intercooler, condenser, radiator, etc don’t work as well. External lines tend to have issues leaking over time. You’re adding stuff that’s gonna get in the way of doing any other work on the truck. The manufacturer designed it to work as it came, and for the most part, it does its job just fine. If you’re having high oil temps, I’d start trying to diagnose that. Be it lack of air flow, poor cooling system performance, etc. The 7.3s have a lot less issues with oil coolers than 6.0s do, but I’ll tell you that I’m running a factory oil cooler in my 6.0 for all the reasons I mentioned.

A synthetic oil below 240 should never be a problem. The oil will most likely run 20-30 degrees above the water temp at max.

I run Delo 15w-40. After temps were higher than I felt comfortable with and also because this is a used, new to me truck I want peace of mind so I pulled everything apart. The radiator was 75% clogged with stuff I am still not sure what it was. I replaced the radiator with a 3 core aluminum one, new fan clutch, new water pump and temp sending unit, new thermostat, and while everything was apart I flushed the whole system and replaced with the NAPA heavy duty diesel coolant. Everything back together and unloaded things seam to already be cooler than they were. Now I need to hook up to the camper and go for a drive and see how that does. I honestly think the clogged rad was all the issue but now I know it should all be good to go.....I hope. I did all this (minus the alum rad) to my 02 F250 I pulled with and never had issues but it was stock injectors. Upgraded to a low mileage F350 for better stability down the interstate and still learning the truck.

I would like to add after more research, another oil cooler doesn't seam to lower anyone's temp enough to justify what the set up would cost. So I will be sticking with the original equipment and with the above mentioned upgrades should be good to go.
