Factory DVD help in an 08 crewcab

I've got an 08 fx4 crew cab with a factory DVD player on the roof. Can I play a DVD on that with the headphones and listen to something else on the stereo? Would the DVD player work with an aftermarket stereo?

Yea ofcourse you can. The rear sub shuts off though.

The answer is no on the last question. The rear DVD player is connected to the factory head via CAN bus signals. If you disconnect the bus between them the rear DVD player stops working.

I have the Rear Entertainment System (RES) in my 08. Its pretty good but has a few annoying "features".
