Factory Subwoofer wiring colors...

Okay guys here we go. I got it all finished up and it sounds insane. I'm posting this from my phone so hopefully everything posts in order.... I used a JL13TW5 in an SPL2K box powered by a JL Slash 600/1 V3 with an audio control LC2i as my line out.

First start by removing the back seat...

**please excuse the dog hair, that was a surprise left from the previous owner lol...

Next you will need to pull this vent out because the box won't fit it you leave it in.

Cover the vent and surrounding area with hush mat

So now it is time to get rid of all of the factory sub equipment and tire jack.

Once that is removed, you will need to take the factory Sony amp off of the subwoofer box and find a new home for it to be mounted. I just stuck it on the back wall.

I don't know how crucial this is, but I didn't want the pointed cab bolt to make my box sit unlevel so I dremeled the tip off...

So. Now a quick clean-up to get rid of that doggie fur and dremel debris.

Now we can test fit the box and look to see how things can be mounted. (Quick note: I ditched the entire carpet lining that goes on the back wall. It was too much of a hassle to try and make fit back right, plus I didn't want it to overheat the amp).

Using the amp I did, and the location I did, I had to shift my window motor over a little bit...

Next is the wiring part that I'm sure you guys will find most helpful. Here is a close up of the factory sub wires going into the LC2i.

Once you have that done, mounting and cleaning up wires is about all that's left.

I should note that the LC2i has a function where it can provide the remote signal to turn on you amp... I felt that was more complicated than simply running a wire from the truck directly to the amp. I used the white with a blue stripe wire located in the "free bundle" of wires under the drivers side dash.

The LC2i will need power and ground though so I would use the big BLUE with RED stripe as the 12v+ and the BLACK with YEllOW stripe as the ground. These are located on one of the large plugs going into the factory Sony amp. I cut them and solder-spliced into them, and then shrink wrapped them.

Finally get everything dialed in and enjoy!

Note: on the 13tw5 sub, the protective screen does rub on the back seat when you fold it up and down. I'm sure you could remove the guard but I would rather leave it there.

Yeah man it really isn't bad. The hardest part is finding the space to move and rearrange stuff. Also, moving the window motor aside was cake and it still functions perfect. :ford:

Where did you purchase the sub, sub box and amp from? Were they separate or some kind of package?

I bought the sub, LC2i and amp from a stereo shop here in Austin. Bought my wiring kit from Crutchfield, and my box I got directly through SPL2K. Look up that name and it will take you to his website, he will build a box for you however you want, you just tell him what sub you plan to run.

Do you think that plug you cut off the end (to run the hard wires into the amp) would just HAPPEN to be the same plug that would plug directly into the factory sub for the F150 Subwoofer setup? If I remember correctly (I'm not home right now) there's only one plug that comes from under the back carpet (from the radio) and plugs into the amp on the F150 sub. The amp is hard mounted onto the factory sub box and it's hard wired to the subwoofer....... If you still have that plug, don't throw it away. I'm interested in trying it if you'd let me pick it up from you?

Setup looks awesome by the way!

I'm going to search the same equipment and see how much I can find all of that for! You got me thinking now......lol.

Besides...where are you located? Might be worth a trip........a few of us get together and have an install party (with a few cold beverages of choice of course!).

I have been piecing the parts together for awhile to avoid spending a lot at once and to do it how I wanted. I kept the plug with enough wire on it to solder it back together if I need to. I did the whole setup where I could return it back to stock, I kept the stock subwoofer also. I'm in Austin. Install took me awhile because I soldered all my connections.

I take it the sony amp has to stay to run the other speakers? It wasn't "just for the sub"?

Yeah you have to retain the factory Sony amp for the rest of the stereo.

I'm about to pull the trigger on this, thanks again for the write, really makes things easier. My question now, I'm on the fence, do I go with 2-12s, or the 1 - 13?

Pros and Cons?

My concern with 1 - 13, is it going to hit hard enough?
My concern with 2 - 12s, is it worth the trouble? To make the box bigger, move the amps under the seat............etc. Will 2- 12s hit that much harder than the 1 -13?

I'm getting older, so I'm not really looking to rattle the windows in my neighbor's house. But at the same time, anything worth doing, is worth doing right!

Okay I think I can help you here also. I spoke with SPL2K when I was ordering my box from him and he said that the benefits of sound with 2 subs do not outweigh the hassle of moving the window motor, tight spaces, etc etc.. With that being said, I would be VERY surprised if you were not satisfied with the bass output of one of these JL13TW5 subs... It is loud enough that I will probably never have it cranked to full song unless I am just demonstrating its abilities. Also, with the single sub, it gives you a lot of room to work with when mounting the amp, lc2i, and factory sony unit. Once I had everything lined up where I wanted it to mount, install was pretty simple really. I think you would be very pleased with the 1 JL 13" shallow mount.

A pair of Illusion Audio Carbon C10's will outperform any pair of 12's that will actually fit behind the seat. You're limited to shallow stuff or cheap stuff. Illusion C10's aren't cheap but there's a reason for that.

So I went with the 1 sub..................and love it. Extremely impressed how well this thing sounds. And thanks for this write up, it made life really easy hooking everything up.
