i also bent rods in my first 6.4 with HD300 and lbf on 5. i doubt anyone has abused a truck as hard...it still ran even. eventually cracked a piston.

Did you have your injectors tested after that happened? Any indication of a headgasket failure?

Yes, all came back okay. It was puking on a hard run. I beat it pretty hard lol

If you're gonna *** it up. *** IT UP!! Haha

No kidding right lol When the shop told me that I was like :cursing:

Truck ran great! Never knew it was bent or anything. I wasnt even going to do studs, just fix egr cross over. but then the well while im in here happend, and it became this huge snowball lol

I was never against doing hd pistons, i just thought the coating was a waste of money but after seeing the video i'll get them coated too

Definitely not a waste of money.... coating on pistons makes huge difference in their ability to stand up to extreme heat. I'm putting coated HD pistons back in mine... along with a new rod.

That was kinds truck if i remember correctly. That was just horrible luck. That truck was beautiful under the hood. A very very clean build! Nice job on that truck!

Yep. Now it's a decoration piece in my office.

So would de lipping lower fuel economy?
I know there are benefits, such as when tuned and the timing is advanced the burn comes out of the bowl, thus torching the lip. However the lip does help promote a more complete burn. Also tuning wise one could spread the burn out a little more. (mind you that's whats being done to begin with, hence the star pattern, now you would be more in the bowl, well kinda of as you opened the bowl up)
Then you get into injector spray pattern and that would change how you would want the bowl too.

Bottom line is for a race motor I would do it, but on a daily driver with a tune im thinking no. Or a slight delip to compensate for the tune. Now since the ih pistons have a thicker edge, do they also have a bigger bowl in the piston? Just curious if the bowl diameter in a ih piston vs a factory piston would be more likely to keep the burn in the bowl vs outside causing the edge to be torched.

Thanks

so if the above theory is correct, then it would make sensor to use bigger injectors, but shorter pulse width to keep the burn in the bowl. That should make the pistons last longer if you have stock or non delipped pistons as your not torching the lip.

please correct me if im wrong as im thinking of going to 15% nozzles, non delipped coated ih pistons, and a tune that keeps it in the bowl.

i see a slight decrease in economy but that also varies tune to tune (mind you-i have heavily machined pistons). i did not see any mileage decrease with hd pistons.

the bowl looks to be the same size but a slightly different contour(not so pointed in the bottom of the bowl) and obviously a more open bowl.

to be honest-you are overthinking it a bit. just run coated HD pistons and you will have zero problems.

LOL, What he said. I wouldn't get too technical into burn times and injector patterns on a daily driver. I agree coated IH pistons will be your strongest/best option with very little side affects if any.

Thanks everyone for all the help :)
