Went to install new intake plenums and found my screen was missing. Took the plenum off and found half of the missing screen laying between #3 & #5 intake runners & the other half MIA. Inspected the head with a bore scope and everything looked OK. Ran compression and got 380 on 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 & 360 on 7. Then I proceeded to the turbo and found a chewed up wheel. Does anyone know if I can get just a new wheel/shaft or do I have to buy the whole CHRA? I know this probably don't happen often but its worth while to get new plenums then to have this happen. Still built 40psi of boost and ran great when I brought it in:shocked:
There was basically no screen left. I put the broken piece back in place to see how much went threw the motor. You can kinda see where it broke away.

Something got jammed in there against the exhaust housing. Look at the damage, most of it is on the bottom of the wheel. Almost looks like the exhaust housing wasn't on right and was cocked, allowing the exhaust turbine to hit.. Whats the inside of the exhaust housing look like? If it was that screen that made it all the way through, I'l like to see what the valves look like.

Exactly how I popped my motor. Sucked a plenum sreen, completely stock beside a canned TS-6 position. Sucked it thru the intake runner, wedged in intake valve, bent valve, beat on the top of the piston, pushing compression back thru intake. Other side was cracked and about to fall in.

I hate the stock plenums. I warn everyone about the screens cracking, and to not use them. If they do, remove the screen. Do not know the point of them, anything that is small enough to get past the screen will do damage anyway....

I don't know how the hell it made it threw but it did. My guess is little pieces made it threw and got caught in between the scroll and wheel. Probably while I was at 40+ boost too. I thought for sure compression numbers would be hurt. I was just trying to warn people what could happen is all.

Very worth while when putting a turbo on. Also about all aftermarket plenums open up the valley and dont have to worry about crushing them with the bolt clamp.

How do the plenums seal to the heads, or what is the best way to re-seal? Gasket, o-ring, sealant?

FWIW-Thorough surface prep + IH grey + 24 hour cure have held 50+ psi on two different turbos and two different plenums (BDP + WOP) for me.

Awesome, I'll go track down some of the IH grey sealant this weekend.

Thanks!
