So the story goes, I had tow h&S tuning in my 2011 f450. Was pulling our 20k horse trailer when I decided to take the scenic route to our destination. I knew there was a steep hill but forgot how steep. 3/4 up the 15mile hill the truck shuts down due to exhaust temp sensor reading temperature out of range. Let the truck cool down for 30 mins and its good to go . But now has a bit of a miss at idle. Continued on our way to and from our location. 3000miles later I finally take it into ford to see what the miss is They did a relative compression test and see #3 cylinder is down 13%.

Truck birth date is April, 2010. Truck has 99,500miles on it, & has been on the road for longer than 5yrs.

I have 3 options,

1: Get ford to put in new long block and submit for good will warranty.$15,000 up front than less any $$ that ford may chip in.

2: Buy a used drop in from a wrecked truck & have installed $8500

3: Tear down & see whats wrong. Than rebuild with the parts of my choice. $$$?

Shouldn't they just cover it under the 100,000 mile engine warranty? I've never had to pay up front for work when I was covered unless it turned out not to be a warranty item.

Canada is only till 160,000km/99,419.391 miles. I am 4months past the 5yrs also.

A side note to my original post, the wrecked drop in engine is out of a 2014 with 20k on it.

I'd rock the drop-in and let her eat! Depending on what they want for core, I might keep mine as I'm sure the fuel system is still fine.

That's a bit high for a drop-in even with labor, but I realize prices are higher up there.

Is your 450 a cab & chassis or pickup?

450 pickup. I tried to find a 2015 drop in, but 2014 was the closest thing I could find. With the exchange rate the drop in would be $5600 plus $3k labor roughly. Haven't quoted the labor. Thought about doing it my self.

engine R&R on a 6.7 isn't horrible

Thats what I was thinking. I am going to be moving in the next few weeks, so I was going to wait till them. My new place has a large 4 bay shop.

I would like to tackle it myself, just don't want to f something up. I guess if I pull it and unable to get it installed, I will save on part of the labor.

Then I could pull the heads, and for all I know it could be something simple. Like a bent rod or maybe deformed a valve by getting to hot.

Damn thing I was just about to sell it too. $20k if anyone is interested lol

I'd drop it, core it, and build it like you want to with selected parts. I cored the stock '12 motor and got a 2015 long block and built it to my choice.

Only thing was with coring it to Ford never got to tear it down and see what happened. I was told by Ford it dropped a glowplug and had low compression on 2 or 3 cylinders. It also sounded like a hammer on a tin roof when it was running. So I don't think they were BS'ing me lol

F'n ford makes a 8mm spark plug. Which is uncommon for compression testing adapters. Spark plug out and no way to test compression. Can't get a hold of a small bore scope either so I can atleast take a look. Blah.
