I would stick with close to stock specs otherwise you will run into timing issues. This trans is not like the 4r100 where they continually stack clutches to change gear ratios you have clutches coming on then off them reapplying so the calibrations need to be close.. Adding clutches are where u are going to gain JMO and experience..

Out of the box the clutch clearances were within factory tolerance according to the atsg manual. Basically just slapped it together and it was ready to go.

I have the manual as well, but as Jd mentioned, they tolerences are probably different then the factory ones out of the manual due to having more clutches...

Also, I see on Elites site they are listing Raybestos GPZ clutches. These must be relatively new, because I dont think these were what they had listed when I bought this competition rebuild kit in the end of summer/beginning of fall 2012.... Just to let you know JD..

Also, like stated above are these kits put together to drop in and have the right, or relatively correct tolerence, right out of the box?

Please explain

Not sure what you want me to explain, its just was JD posted in post #15.... Im new to this transmission stuff, and Im just waiting on some reliable info so we dont put this together and it be all F'd up. For all I know the kit is made to be to the manufacturers spec out of the box and its good to go.

Its sounds like at least you and slc dzl threw it in, it measured to factory tolerances and it was good to go, and has worked so far. Im hoping its that simple :p

I mean it works
I can see if you're checking the clearance between each one ya itll be different cause you gotta divide the total end clearance by more clutches but you're not doing that. You're measuring the clearance between all of the clutches and steels and the retaining snap ring.

For reference I bought my Elite competition kit last fall. The date stamped on the clutches is like 4/12.... All of them say raybestos stage 1 except for one clutch pack that states gen 2 on them. Im almost positive this is not the new raybestos gpz material. Are those tolerences still good for what I have?

Also is it worth my time to use the old style clutches or should I looks for some gpz material clutches?

I also had the older kit but ended up upgrading to the gpz clutchs last time my trans was freshened up, havnt had a single issue sense. When this kit works and is set up correctly it makes for a fun ride. Good Luck with your build.

How did the older style clutches hold up? Also where did you get the new clutches from?

JD sold me my original kit and then I went through Tadd when I went to the new clutch packs.

I don't think you will have a issue with the original kit but Tadd expressed how happy he was with the GPZ stuff and my trans was apart for some clutch replacement anyways so it was a no brainer.
