Was riding around today and punched it one time and blew a boot off. So I thought no big deal, but by the time I made it back to the house it sounded like this:
YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

It goes away when it idles up, but once it comes back down its back to sounding like crap. Checked all the pulleys and tq converter bolts they were all tight. Did find that the starter was about to fall out, but that didn't fix anything. I am really at a loss on this. Does anybody know what this could be? Thanks

What boot blew off? Did it hit any wiring that it could have damaged or unplugged. Make sure everything is plugged in tight just to be sure.

Is that video with the boot back on or still off?

It blew the cold side boot that comes off the intercooler. Didn't see anything loose, but probably wouldn't hurt to check again either. That video is with the boot back on. The noise sounds to me like its coming from under the passenger side valve cover. Should I pull it and check everything under there to make sure its ok?

No I was hoping you blew the wires or connector off the ICP or something with the IPR.

Where you on it really hard when the boot blew?

I am really not the one of the best guys with top experience. Hopefully Dave( Golfer) will stop in or one of the other guys like HotRodTractor, Marty etc...

Does the sound come from one bank of the engine then the other. I would pull the VC from that bank.

No codes?

I can tell you from info I learned from Pius that the pressure changes from blowing a boot is very hard on the bearings of the turbo as you go from force one way to zero is a instant and that causes things to slam one direction. But as far as the engine from it I tend to think damage the boot flying off caused for given it happens normally under hard driving something from that. i.e bent PR, dead hole, oring, flex plate etc..

Well after fooling with it some more this evening I found out it makes that noise in park and neutral. That leads me to believe that something is fubared in the tranny. It goes away when I put it in gear but comes right back when put back in park and neutral. That would be the tq converter wouldn't it?

Sorry I had seen a number of other people that after they have run hard had these wierd idle issues and sputtering etc... They end up with a broken flex plate. Thats what made me think it was possibly your issue. The way your idle changed when you rev'd was the real tip off. Glad you got it out . Is it back up and running yet?

Just got it apart tonight, waiting on parts to get here tomorrow. Btw pulling a 4r100 for the first time in the basement while the truck is on jackstands is a bit nerve wrecking...

I am sure it was.

I can not recall but I seem to remember there being a tech from ford on the flex plates of some 7.3 and there was some sort of upgrade kit for it. I can not recall any more than that.

Surprising the truck would still move, guess it was holding on by a thread. That's not too uncommon on those 7.3s especially with some mileage.
I hate pulling transmissions, especially autos.

I find it odd that the flexplate has E40D stamped on it. It's visible in the second pic. Got parts in today, just waiting on some MerconV from O'reileys to get here in the morning. Should be up and running by tomorrow night. Thanks again everybody for your help!

Are you sure that is the appropriate fluid for a 4R100?

IIRC originally the formula for Mercon V has some issue with the specific friction modifiers or amount used with the 4r100 so many said to stay clear of it and go with standard Dexron III/MERCON. Now I believe the formula was changed and its no longer an issue and Merc V is the recommended fluid.

The issue is when Mercon V was reformulated Dexron III/Mercon stopped being liscened and thus monitored by Ford. Given this current day Dexron III may or may not be the same as it once was. Mercon V however is tested to meet Ford specs for it.

Here is a good thread on it: What fluid for 4r100 and power steering fluid?
