What woudl cause low pressure oil pump to get torn up?

Oh, there's a screen, I checked and it's fastened in there good.
Looking at the size of the holes in the screen, it's easy to see how a needle bearing, and whatever got to this motor can pass through it. I think that screen is good to keep out nuts and bolts that might fall in the pan, otherwise it seems kind of useless.

I had the same thing happen to my engine Jim. It came out of a wreck, I put a new oil cooler, hpop fitting and ported intake on and put it in my truck. Went to start it, had oil press and then lost it...took the lpop out and it looked exactly like that...put an another one in and she ran...that was 10k miles ago...I'll look at it again when I do studs...eventually...if needed.
