Why?

That is my question.

I could see if I was making 600hp, 700hp...

But 450-500hp? Most of the time around 400.

Some of you are on Facebook and were friends and have seen the pictures, but those not...

#5 main. Cracked out to the exterior, then back to the cam bore. Motor is otherwise spotless. Picked up an oil leak this winter on the way back from Denver. Some how the pan worked loose, or so I thought. Drove it a few more months, just dealing with a gallon every 300-400 miles.

Picked up a knock about 2 weeks before I pulled it, maybe 3. Drove another 1500 miles or so, then pulled easter weekend to figure out what was up...

Just stumped...

Motor was still beautiful inside, 240k on it overall at this point. 400k on the truck.

Not sure what I am going to do right now. I picked up a long block off CL for $750 hoping it would be a "runner" but it had water in it for a while and the bearings are tighter then ****. Its a good core, but... Came with another rebuildable short block.

Would love to just find another good low mile take out, but just not finding anything yet.

Thought about a new short block, found a builder with cut and coated pistons, $4000 shipped.

Well I'd say it's tuning.
Your pistons perty much prove it. They have some nice cracks on the top. The star pattern in the bowl is actually half in and half out of the bowl. That is advanced inj timing. Even if your bottom end didn't crack those pistons would of let go sooner then later. Those cracks coming from the bowl will just grow to the outside till they hit the ring land .

LOL... Thats pretty consirvitive tuning, and timing.

If you want to see ****ty tuning, I'll dig up some of the pictures from the DP tuned motor.

90% of the spray is in the bowl, very small cracks on any of those pistons, only three had any.

The spray pattern should be in the bowl not up.on the lip like yours. That's from the piston still coming up the bore while the fuel is being sprayed early.
That one piston has 4 cracks that I can see and 1 of them is almost half way across to the edge. .
Pics don't lie, you asked why, this is why.
It did last a good while tho!

Golfer said this is common. It was a bad casting. To thin in spots. Haven't seen it personally but seen a few pics he posted.

You cant have the spray in the bowl with any kind of performance tuning. I'll dig up some pictures from the DP tuned motor if you want to see garbage tuning.

Cracks happen, Nothing you can do about that short of machined pistons.

I posted the worse piston for a reason, 3 had 2-3 cracks, 4 had none.

Mine did he same thing. Mine is a e99 and the engine was built dec 24 1997. Mine cracked a cylinder wall too. One cam bearing was rubbing on the push rod
