Not sure if it was the best place.......but I put mine directly under the old pickup tube. Looked to be the lowest point. Some guys say middle of tank bit mine works fine

i was just wondering cause right under the pick up pump there like a indentation and the directions say it needs a 5 inch flat surface so i think i am going to put it towards the very back

No put it in the spot of the indentation that is the lowest spot on the tank, thats where the stock pickup is. Use a 3" hole saw

Mine's in that indentation too. As for install its about the most straightforward thing in the world. Drill proper size hole in tank, install sump, tighten/seal everything, run fuel line. Boom, done. half hr TOPS

What (if any) silicone are you guys using to seal these. We decided not to silicone mine but I did use red loctite on the bolts which I think the diesel ate right through because the bolts seem to loosen up a bit over time and it leaks. Not badly but just a little leak...

Ford/International Gray RTV only, nothing else will work as well, I've tried them all.

I'll have to check the tube I used, but I got it at the autoparts store. After researching it seemed like the best option because it could hold up fine to gasoline, kerosene, etc...it was a black RTV.
