6.4 Oil Run away....

Has anyone had this happen on a 6.4 turbo blowing a seal? This happened to me after 30 miles on a new turbo I swapped in . I'm not mentioning any names or anything...I just want to know if I'm the only one this has happened to ? Tore the heads off and the block is hydro locked. Injectors are fine and heads look fine. Shop pressure tested the turbo to 10 psi and it doesn't hold pressure worth a ****...

A EGR delete, turbo swap, studs, and intake manifold job turned into a ****ing mess...

Basically the same thing as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmkHTkmj2_U but on a 6.4. No cracked pistons and no head damage. Gaskets are ****ed though.

Video or it didn't happen.. LOL just messing, that sucks man. How long did it run away before it quit?

The tech test driving it noticed it creeping up on its own at about 1800 rpm or so and he shut the key off but it was too late. He said it revved up for about 3-5 seconds before shutting down. 30 miles on a turbo and fresh studs / gaskets.

This sure sounds odd to me..... Did the tech pre-oil the turbo prior to installation?

Also, how do you have a hydro locked engine with the heads off? I assume you meant it a different way, but I am rather curious here

Tech said he pre-oiled the turbo prior to install...

The engine is stuck. It won't turn over and the pistons are stuck to the cylinder walls...Keep in mind I'm only relaying information back and forth... I do CNC machining and not auto repair...

How does the motor run away on blown turbo seals? Oil would have to travel a hell of a long way including through the inner cooler. Ive had many turbos blow pouring oil out the exhaust with no issues

A ton of oil was drained from the intercooler. It has been suggested that it ran off the crank case oil until that got used up... No fuel was found in the oil and the pistons are fine. Injectors look fine as well. Just coolant and engine oil drained from the pan.

Yeah, I don't know the whole story and I can tell you what I'd wager the problem is...... Your tech screwed the pooch and now you are stuck in the middle

I can totally understand the motor running away with a blown turbo seal - it happens - but your bottom end is locked up because the motor sucked out and burned all its own oil.... bearings are shot, and basically the whole thing was starved for oil.... you need a new motor...

My original motor died a brutal death from running away. Mine was due to 5 injectors leaking overtime and filling the crank case full of fuel though. Nothing to do with the turbos. Didn't know it was happening until it was too late. Hope you get it figured out man. It's definitely odd that this happened 30 miles after the work was done on your truck.

It happened during the time the tech was testing it after doing the work...I never got the truck back.

yeah I'm on the hunt for a new short block...
